Fausto, opera semi-seria by Louise Bertin was premiered at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris in 1831. The work combines two rarities in Romanticism: it is the work of a woman, and although Italian in language, style and genre, it was composed by a French woman.
Two years after the publication of Hector Berlioz's Huit Scènes de Faust, Louise Bertin took her inspiration from Goethe's play. She showed the modernity of her time in an ambitious work, which fell into oblivion after only three performances - but now Fausto gets a deserved second chance!
