I designed this 30" scale 5 string J bass on Halo. The third pot is a blend, and the pickups are split coils, Aero probably.

I have a Gibson L-5 Super 400. I got it when I got my first real job and could afford it, for the first time. That corresponded to a big drop off in my time and interest in playing, so it has mostly sat in various closets in various cities these last 25 years.

It isn't in great shape cosmetically. It was made in one of the low points in Gibson manufacturing and all of the gold plated parts have corroded.

I also have an ES-335 (black) and a Dove (red sunburst).

1) I can learn to live with most neck shapes and profiles, but many years ago I was asked (auditioned? LMAO) to shoot frames for a book that detailed the collection of a relatively well known guitarist, and while visiting his impressive manor enjoyed handling a number of instruments, including a Super 400 from the mid 50s. If I had to choose one neck profile to play, it would be that one. It felt like one inch (2.5cm?) all the way down, no taper.

2) Nice guitars, bro.

I think a tele sounds great for jazz. Not my Pinecaster, it's an Esquire clone.

Looks cool. I remember you mentioning that guitar. I'd like to play it.  8)

Don't know if you'll remember during a discussion about your amps I mentioned I use a Peavey Bandit? (turns out my current one isn't actually a Bandit, per se, on close inspection it's Peavey Special) but in any case I'd like to hit you up at some point because I'm looking for a simple combo to fit my needs. So far one of the Fender 68 (or 65) reissues have sounded good to me? But I'm wary of having a lack of clean headroom and it seems you know your speaker and stuff, so...

The kind of amp you want is a Deluxe Reverb with more power. In the U.S. you'd go to a maker of Fender inspired amps that specializes in that kind of thing like Allen or Vintage Sound.

So, your situation is hopeless but not serious. I'd check out the newest Fender Hod Rod Deluxe or Peavey Classic 30. They are hugely popular for a reason.

drogulus, thanks, man - I appreciate your reply and the info contained within. By the weekend at the latest I'll hopefully be able to post again in a manner that allows me to benefit from picking your brain further on the road to what I'm seeking. And fwiw, your straightforward insight that's sans the typical BS typically found elsewhere is cool.   8)

Also, one of the Lollar CC style neck pickups is now with someone who'll enjoy using it. I've another of them remaining, but at this stage I don't think it's going into one of the Telecasters.

Looks cool - especially the one with what appears to be the CC type neck pickup.

I have a question for the multitude. What illustrious electric guitar would you not want to own, and why?

Ah, you don't want to own a bad guitar. I'm talking about the illustrious ones. For instance I don't want to own a Gretsch White Falcon. Gretsch quality per dollar is probably better than it used to be but they were never as well made as other big name brands.

Eastwood Guitars makes quasi-replicas of off-brand guitars from the '60s, only better made than the originals.

I no longer play electric guitar (and very little classical--I prefer the piano), but when I did, this 7-string custom GMW was my weapon of choice:

I don't know for sure.

My ex bought me a tele with a huge neck that I don't believe I'll part with. I don't want anything else. But for the sake of the thread...

Some might know what I mean by the vibe of the Gibson ES 150 or even the 125. Charlie Christian and - I can't imagine he'll see this post, but SimonNZ will probably be familiar with this guy - Rene Thomas, playing an instrument that helps quickly, brightly, produce the fundamental note. I could buy a real nice vintage example, but I feel it would be too much guitar for me.

That's about it. But also, maybe a Mosrite that Bob Bogle(?) played with The Ventures. Or a 335 circa Alvin Lee? Here's one, whoever played the solo on 'It's So Easy' by Buddy Holly and the Crickets - would that be a Strat? Yeah, a Strat from that era.

What about you, drogulus? Got any guitars (or even guitar/amp combos) in mind?

The one I have, the Gibson Super 400. It was produced in the 1980's, at one of the repeated nadirs of the Gibson brand. It is a faithful reproduction of the guitar they had made since the mid 20th century, but with inferior materials, workmanship, and no pride of manufacture.

My Gibson ES-335 from the mid 70's is a far superior in terms of quality of build.

I think I don't want to own a Les Paul, even though I would like to own a guitar that sounds like a Les Paul, with a pair of humbuckers, mahogany with a maple top.

I put this together on the Halo site as an alternative that would suit me better:

A set of Peter Green humbuckers would complete the package.

Maybe I know what you mean, albeit for a far different reason. I like the way a Les Paul can play/sound, but it's perhaps too much class for a man like me.    ;D
