I noticed there was an acoustic guitar thread so I thought to add this one. In doing so I'm not trying to tread on any toes - I consider myself nothing more than an amateur musician - nor am I trying to distract from other informative and cool threads like the one by oor drogulus.

It's weird to be posting a photo of a guitar. Much like my cameras/lenses they're just tools to me. I'm not romantic about such stuff at all. Anyway, this is the only photo I appear to have of one of my guitars. I think this one was taken by the guy from my insurance company, because apparently they need to have visual documentation of everything I own.

I've some nice instruments, but I'm a simple man with simple tastes and so for the most part Telecasters fit my requirements. It might seem surprising, given my limited grasp on theory, but my bag is very much about playing jazz on them.

"You overestimate my power of attraction," he told her. "No, I don't," she replied sharply, "and neither do you".

Da/nyet? Not much of guitar players then. More like consumers, probably.

I have a Gibson L-5 Super 400. I got it when I got my first real job and could afford it, for the first time. That corresponded to a big drop off in my time and interest in playing, so it has mostly sat in various closets in various cities these last 25 years.

It isn't in great shape cosmetically. It was made in one of the low points in Gibson manufacturing and all of the gold plated parts have corroded.

I also have an ES-335 (black) and a Dove (red sunburst).

I think a tele sounds great for jazz. Not my Pinecaster, it's an Esquire clone.

From time to time I consider getting a semihollow guitar, an alternative to the Gibson 335. I'm inclined to get a Guild Starfire. I have the bass, and the guitars are likely to be of equal quality.

The only strike against the Starfire is the bridge pickup. When Guild decided to reintroduce the Starfire series and other electrics that used the small humbucker pickups they sent a pair of them to Korea to be copied with the same "don't change anything" instructions they gave for the Starfire bass and its pickups. But it didn't go as well this time as the bridge pickup output was way too low to match the neck pickup. It was a flawed set, and Guild hasn't corrected its error or even acknowledged that they made one.

Therefore I'd have to have the bridge pickup rewound to bring it up to spec. Probably I would buy another bridge pickup for that and send it to my pickup guy who did the Starfire bass and the Pinecaster.

Always thought Ibanez was the best value, got a similar model back around 2010, neck through body construction and a price of around $400

The only Ibanez I would get would be a MIJ Artist, the only one made to the standards of my Artist 2617 from the late '70s.

     The new one:

An old one like the one I had:

I'm averse to store bought instruments. Only 1 of 4 of mine is bought in a guitar shop, the others are built to order.

Check out this builder and use the configurator to design your own thing:

Electric guitars are excellent for Current Listening.
