I can read notes but generally one at a time and one line per few minutes  ;D

I was gratified but not surprised at these preliminary survey results, which agree with my observations of music fans I meet in the "real" world.  And how different this is from so many other pursuits!  Can you imagine a sports bar where three fourths of the fans have played at college level? ;D

I was shocked, to be honest. I expected there to be a more even split.

We seem to be a proud few, Mark, those of us who might admire and cherish something we're not part of! With no offense meant to those who are a part of classical music, of course...

Obviously, being musically trained might often mean that one is also inclined to like the music one is trained in. And being a devotee of a certain type of music might very well lead to one acquiring training in that area.

But neither of the two is anywhere near to being a prerequisite for the other, in my view. In fact, they might be entirely unrelated, in a given person's life. Still an interesting poll, though. ;)

Piano when I was 10. I won an award for the 'best work of the year'.

Bass Guitar at age 13.

Guitar and singing tuition in my early 20's.

I was a professional musician for 13 years.

I changed careers 5 years ago. [Full-time photographer for the past 3 years]

I've only picked up my guitar once in the past 3 years! [and I could barely play a thing :o]

I wasn't 'classically' trained, but I wish I'd stuck with the piano a bit more when I was very young...
