Tennis anyone?

Significant bushfire smoke over Melbourne this morning. I expect they will close the roof on the larger courts. I'm not sure what will happen to play on the outside courts.

Quote from: Belle on January 24, 2026, 12:46:01 PMI don't remember Willis.  I've been able to catch many matches on Stan - our subscriber sports channel, which offers a choice of all matches.  I haven't seen Djokovic in action yet.  Sinner barely won yesterday as he cramped badly in the heat and the roof was closed on the stadium at that time and he came alive again.  People were protesting, as he seemed likely to lose the match with his cramping.  However, all tennis was stopped from open courts and the other stadium had its roof closed at the same time.  The Melbourne heat is absolutely dreadful - life threatening for sports people - and I'll never understand why the Open is conducted there in the height of summer!!  Heat which is inhuman to tolerate had to be endured by Djokovic and Nadal in the past, when it was over 40C and the roofs were kept open.  It's an occupational health and safety issue!  And also amazed how so few players wear hats.  Sinner is fair and red-headed and the most vulnerable to Melanoma!!  Especially with his history of skiing!!
Marcus Willis made it through the quallies at Wimbledon (2016).  He was ranked 772 at the beginning.  He won the first round of the main draw.  Second round was vs. Federer on the center court!  And he actually won some games against him.

I heard about Sinner's cramping and he himself said that he was lucky when they called in the heat rule (as he was cramping). And yes, I can only imagine that the heat is horrible.  I heard that it started out in the 60's earlier in the week and then shot up.  I know that there are various sprays that one can apply (ones for ones head/hair?).  And yes, the heat gets to everyone who visits there (unless you're possibly in an air-conditioned VIP area)...including our forum member here.

And melanoma is no joke.  A good friend of mine's sister died from it when she was young.

A bit sleepy here...long day and trying to figure out a balance between tennis, sleep, and concerned about the up coming snow and cold...so different from Melbourne.  Expect that I'll be doing lots of shoveling.

Sweet dreams,

K

p.s.  Carlos is up...and so am I.  ;) At least for a while.

Yes, I'm watching Carlos as I write this.  Good luck with the snow and ice.  It's 37c here where I live, 160k north of Sydney.

The smoke did clear up by the middle of the day.

Alcaraz v Paul is probably the best match we've seen.

Sorry to hear about the brush fires.

Happy for the two of you that you were able to watch the match live.  That's cool that you were able to get into that arena to see it.   8)  Am watching more of it now.

Heard earlier today that Mensik withdrew from the open (not certain as to cause), so Novak got a walkover!  I'm sure that he'll appreciate the extra time to recuperate.

Apparently Mensik developed an abdominal injury that grew worse with each match that he played.

Have mixed feelings about watching Maddy vs. Jessica.  Will be hard to watch two of the top American female players play against each other.  They have a joint podcast (did one yesterday together) and even shared a practice court earlier today and are friends.

@Belle How are you managing to stay cool?  I don't envy you!  Low digits here, but have power and (hopefully) snowfall won't be that bad chez moi.  From what I last heard, about a million Americans without power.

And it must also be hotter than H at the open.  Have you ever been there Belle?

Need to work on dinner; oh, fiddle!  They're showing footage of Federer playing now....I'm sunk!

By the way, Happy Australia Day!   :)

Back home.

Melbourne is going to be hellishly hot tomorrow. 45 degrees forecast.

Canberra will be nearly as bad the day after tomorrow. It's the worst heatwave in several years.

One of the things about Melbourne though is how much it swings. After 45 tomorrow the forecast is just 24 the day after. I imagine that for the players the massive variation in conditions makes it difficult to adjust.

I'm amazed that you and your mother survived the extreme heat!  That must have been brutal on your bodies.  And yes, for the pros, I would think that it would be hard to adjust:  nighttime play vs. daytime and differences overall in terms of temp--needing different string tension, how your shots move through the air, etc.

Caught the tail end of Sinner's match.  Looks like Darderi's game kicked in at the end?  Ben vs. Casper now.  Not certain how much of it I'll catch live as I have a busy day ahead (outdoors).

Happy viewing!  Oh, in case you haven't heard, from what they were saying on the TC, Rafa will be there next weekend.  8)

Stay cool!

We didn't have extreme heat when we were at the tennis. Apparently I foresaw the weather 3 months ago...

I live in the Hunter region and I'd say we haven't had a hot summer here.  Yet.  My son in Perth is used to 45 degree days.  He works in the Pilbara where it can get to 52 but this isn't recorded officially.

Excellent!  So you missed out on the 102 degrees on Saturday about 39 celsius)--at least according to one website that I looked at?

Or maybe it's the definition/idea of what is extreme temps?  For me, anything over 90 (32C) is really hot (particularly if it is also humid).

At the other end of things, I'm done shoveling for the day.  Warmer during the day here (low 20's) but still due to be bitterly cold at night for the rest of the week.  I'd happily swap you some cold for some of your heat.  :)

Looking forward to the matches tonight on the Laver Court--particularly Alcaraz vs. the Demon and Tien vs. Zverev.
