As always, Italians rule

Arturo Toscanini
Tullio Serafin
Alceo Galliera
Carlo Maria Giulini
Antonello Manacorda

Plus

John Barbirolli
Norman del Mar
Constantin Silvestri

I thought of Barbirolli as well.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Veronika Dudarova (first female entry I think)
Karina Canellakis has a nice ring to it, as well.

Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos

In this clip he tells us how he got his unusual last name (& you can practice your Spanish):

As far as Italians go, Gianandrea Gavazzeni is hard to beat.

Two great French names: Roger Désormière and Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht.

And, of course, Spain's Ataúlfo Argenta.

Rediscovery, the website for free downloads is the place to go for interesting conductors. As well as Odd Gruner-Hegge (see above) there is

Anshel Brusilow
Desire Dondeyne
Andre Vandernoot
Thor Johnson
Dr Hans Wolf

and others. I am sure some are pseudonyms.

+1 for Désiré Dondeyne.

Oswald Kabasta
Břetislav Bakala
Argeo Quadri
Myung-Whun Chung

Celibidache in itself means nothing but the termination -ache (pronounced ah-que (like in Quebec)) suggests a funny character, for instance muțunache (a grotesque, silly marionette), țafandache (a fop) or bulache (a naive person).  :)

That's both an interesting and cool explanation. Thanks.  :)

Last lot -

Adrian Boult - proper Englishman who I imagine listened to Johnners, Blowers and Aggers during Test Match Special while seated in a chair in his back garden.
Yuri Temirkanov - moonlights between orchestra gigs by piloting Soyuz capsules too close to the sun without breaking sweat.
Andre Rieu - can hit a free kick with either foot. Plays anywhere across a flat back four and plans to extend his career in his mid 30s by operating as a sweeper.
Esa-Pekka Salonen - sounds like he can probably drive MK1 Ford Escorts very fast in the snow.
Louis Fremaux - the name of a man who surely has a hot sister named 'Fifi'.

Excellent choices and explanations. I thought of including Boult myself.

A few more from me:

Eugene Goossens
Sir Granville Bantock
Constant Lambert
Sergio Comissiona
Gennady Provatorov

You're welcome. If you want a serious Romanian name for a conductor, pick your choice:

George Georgescu
Horia Andreescu
Cristian Mandeal
Mihai Brediceanu
Ilarion Ionescu-Galaţi
