Mozart: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik [Walter]

I have always considered Walter to be a good Mozartian. His tempi would probably be considered on the slow side when compared with some modern interpreters but his sensitivity to the music is beyond reproach.

The wrong Wunderlich recording is the famous one. The Nonesuch is less pretty but has more drama and emotion.

This comes up on a search on the pianist on Amazon:

Don't know if it's the same recording.  Also comes up on Qobuz on that Sony issue and this one:

"Wrong Wunderlich recording" is an oxymoron.

Kontrapunctus

This piece works amazingly well on the piano. He plays the Variations in F minor very well, too. Excellent sound. (It's not an original BIS recording: they licensed it from the Mandala label and remastered it.)

I'm doing my way through the McEwen quartets. It's a pity that Chandos didn't continue this revelatory cycle. There is some music with personality and spark here. Hopefully they or other record label will finish it.

First listen to this recording

One heckuva a bizarre disc.  The very photogenic Sinziana Mircea sounds as though she can play, but the recording is one of the worst sounding contemporary recordings I've heard, probably only bested (or worsted, though not in a textile sorta way) by Filippo Gamba's dreadful Schumann disc.  Mircea's recording is awful in a different way: the recording makes the piano sound like a toy piano, lacking all bass, and being as airless as can be.  And this from a label named after a studio.  There are some nice moments of playing here and there, and some slightly less nice ones, but I have no way to accurately gauge the overall playing.  The whole disc is a low rent affair, being a CD-R and having the booklet printed on a laser printer, which is fine given the five bucks I paid, but the sound quality is unforgivable.

Comments in the Opera thread. In short: buy it, and buy it fast - it's still only 2.99€ at JPC.

I know that recording. It has some qualities the later one doesn't, like a lighter voice with a freer top. The voice itself is well caught, but the piano is not. For my taste it becomes unpleasant after a while. Also, Wunderlich sometimes overarticulates, as in Mein!, where there is a certain sewing machine quality to the delivery. While imperfect, I prefer the later recording, glitz and all.

What do you think?

Not sure. I have one other recording of these trios  (Arbor Piano Trio on Naxos) but don't remember it well enough to make a direct comparison. But I think they do the music justice. This by the way is a Czech label, and the musicians are also Czech.

This is the last CD of this complete edition ending with two beautiful cantatas. For the secular cantatas I will use the Koopman set, most of the secular cantatas in the Teldec 2000 edition are the same  Koopman recordings.
