I streamed volume one yesterday.  Most delightful classical era symphonies.

Lol nice, but it should be Harty instead of Harry.

Fine music. No great melodies but nice interplay.

As good a disc of Wagner's Overtures and Preludes as you are likely to find.

I was disappointed with Gergiev’s Prokofiev symphony cycle (LSO). His work with the Kirov Orchestra and Rotterdam Philharmonic is more characterful IMO. This Romeo and Juliet is quite fine, more dancing (balletic) than Maazel’s Cleveland set, although that one remains in a class of its own. The sound is excellent, well-balanced and transparent.

What a great Symphony no 21 is! And in a superb performance and recording.

The first two SQs are early works but nicely accomplished for a young composer (1867 and 1868 respectively). The 3rd one is from ten years later. The Scherzo in C major possesses such a vibrant drive and it's very substantial for its short length IMO. Elegance, tenderness and enchanting writing aplenty. Not masterpieces but they are undeniably pleasant and very well written.

Most interested to read your comments on the Foerster quartets. His suite for large orchestra "Cyrano de Bergerac" is wonderful and a personal favourite.

Duly noted. I'm gonna investigate it. Thanks!

Possibly more delightful than the symphonies.

You should really try his piano sonatas and concertos.

Beautiful French late renaissance songs, civilised, not at all dissonant or tortuous or afflicted. On the contrary there's a delightful simplicity about this music.

I wonder why is Italian music from this period -- Gesualdo, Marenzio, Monteverdi, Frescobaldi  etc --  is so very different?
