After the sinuous and colourful expressiveness of Ravel, now some heilige deutsche Kunst:

Richard Wagner
Götterdämmerung

Herbert von Karajan & Berliner Philharmoniker

Lugansky's recording looks very intriguing, I've seen the pieces included; how is it?

Well, like I said, It's wonderful! :)  Obviously, he can't produce all of the orchestral colors, but he certianly brings out all of the music. The sound is superb, too. It should be available on most streaming platforms, but I bought the 24/96 FLAC from e-classical.com for just $10.96. https://www.eclassical.com/harmonia-mundi/richard-wagner-famous-opera-scenes.html

Haydn: String Quartet Op. 76/2 "Fifths"

The minuet is an almost perfectly strict canon!

Listened to the whole set the past days. Loft and youthful performances.

More Schumann for the afternoon - String Quartets, the Fine Arts Quartet on modern instruments and the Kuijken Quartet (2 brothers + 2 daughters) in period performances - I've enjoyed both recordings for years; reviews of the first one attached, but I cannot find any comments on the Kuijken's performance?  I don't really need another set but in perusal of different other reviews, the Dover Quartet was highly recommended - comments please?  Dave

ADDENDUM: Listened to the Dover Quartet on Spotify x 2 - outstanding w/ great reviews attached - love the Kuijken but could replace the Fine Arts Quartet - two versions of these works is enough for me.  ;D

I was just listening to that last week; it's really lovely.

Thread duty:

A really nice 2-CD set of some of Glazunov's best music: Raymonda, Stenka Razin, The Seasons (Svetlanov with good sound) and the Violin Concerto (Milstein/Steinberg/Pittsburgh).

And then a fun disc of Malcolm Arnold wind concertos:

Vivaldi: Juditha Triumphans (Jordi Savall / Le Concert des Nations). Savall really is something, and among a handful of interpreters—e.g., Il Giardino Armonico and Concerto Italiano—who have reinvigorated Vivaldi for me.

CDs 17 and 18 from

Apparently the need to fit everything onto an 80 minute CD resulted in K 265, Twelve Variations on "Ah vous dirai-je Maman" being pushed back to CD 19 (which is mainly works for two pianists) and replaced with the Rondos in a minor K 511 and D major K 585, and the Kleine Gigue in G K 574.

Armstrong Gibbs: Almayne.

Armstrong Gibbs does not go for big gestures or high intensity. He lived in a world where heart on sleeve emotion was frowned upon. His chamber music for violin has a current of melancholy and wistfulness that I am attracted to. No better example then the shortest piece on this CD, 'Almayne' inspired by an English 17th century air. Lovely music.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.
