Before

The Fifth and Sixth.
Again, a somewhat cerebral and restrained approach in the Fifth Symphony--followed by a reverse approach in the Sixth, resulting in an excellent recording of a symphony that generally passes me by.
So while the Fourth and Fifth seem to be good but not great, the Sixth is worth the price of the whole.

Now:
First listen to the Violin and Cello Concertos of Thomas de Hartmann

The Violin Concerto was recorded in Warsaw January 2024.
The cover art is Kandinsky's Traverse Line.

Antonio Vivaldi Avanti l'opera, Rare Opera Overtures, L'Arte dell'Arco, Christopher Hogwood

This is also excellent. I recommend these symphonies very highly.
"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

Tolstoy

Franz Schmidt
Variations on a Hussar's Song
Fantasia for piano and orchestra
Chaconne for orchestra

Jasminka Stančul, piano
Rheinland-Pfalz SPO - Alexander Rumpf

While I have been trying to make sense of Schmidt's symphonies, this album hooked me from start to end.

All the good music has already been written by people with wigs and stuff. - Frank Zappa

This is one of several CDs in the set in which the sleeve art---always by a British artist, mostly from the late Victorian/Edwardian period--has no obvious connection to the music on the CD. In this case it's In A Welsh Valley by Benjamin Leader.

I'm going through a pretty rough time: my sister ended her life last night due to a number of health issues. I'm not sure how much I'll be posting for a few days, but since she loved listening to me play guitar, I listened to this today in her honor.

Oh no...may her memory be always and only a source of blessing.

Eshpai: Symphonies 4 and 5
Bach: Sonata No. 2 and Partita No. 2

Astounding these four pieces.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

A fine but sometimes too bright-sounding group of madrigals from the late Elizabethan/Jacobean era.

The portrait on the cover is that of Mary, Lady Darcy, a member of the Kitson (Kytson) family who were Wilbye's patrons.

Quote from: Symphonic Addict on August 26, 2024, 06:56:00 PMMy go-to recording is with Svetlanov on Melodiya. I like that symphony uninhibitedly hedonistic and passionate, and Svetlanov and the USSR SO did a splendid job I must say.

Don't think I've heard the Svetlanov, so will remedy. I also love the piece, with its early Scriabin charm.

Georgi Sztojanov: Refracting Light (Klaas Stok, conductor / NDR Vokalensemble). Composer, conductor, and ensemble new to me, and a fine introduction.

That is a hard situation to deal with. My mother in law and her husband did the same some years ago. I can understand someone feeling their health was only ever going to decline further and not wishing to continue with no worthwhile quality of life.

Is it the music or the performances? (Sofar I'm not a very big fan of I Fagiolini)

That's though... My condolences and take care.
