A surprisingly dull interpretation coming from a top-drawer ensemble. But I don't blame them, the trio is not too much interesting either.

Try Emanuel Ax/Pamela Frank/Yo-Yo Ma or Garrick Ohlsson/Leila Josefowicz/Carter Brey.

Quote from: Kalevala on October 30, 2024, 08:37:37 AMI enjoy one with Ancerl and the Czech Phil on Supraphon.  I also have one with Mackerras (part of a boxed set) which I should revisit soon as he was wonderful in and loved Czech music.

And keep going with Martinu; go you!  ;D

K

I do have the Ancerl on a "Supraphon gold" download (there was a very good deal on Supraphon gold lossless downloads somewhere and I picked up a bunch of them). Time has more-or-less run out for today, but I did listen to the first movement. He really keeps the momentum high, and it works. I will have to find that Mackerras, because I am a great fan of his.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

Disc 1: Sacred Music

This set had been lingering on my wish lists, but nothing came of it for a long time and I didn't explore it streaming. Now I finally purchased the set it becomes clear that my neglect was a big mistake... This is a major composer from the Trecento!  Based on this 1st disc, the music and the performances in this set are going to be an absolute treat. :)

Must try that set again, my first reaction was not that positive. Maybe I simply had a bad day.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Piano Quintet No 2, Kocian, etc

Marvelous, in the Martinu's Neo-Baroque/Neo-Classical style

Martinu's Les Fresques de Piero della Francesca, again, this time with de Priest/Malmo

A striking work, uncharacteristically for Martinu in a vaguely impressionistic style, perhaps returning to the style of his early works. de Priest is superb here and BIS sound a treat.

Anyone have a favorite recording of this piece to suggest?

The box set @Kalevala mentioned is this one.  I like it as well as the Ancerl.

There's a companion set devoted to Dvorak and Smetana.

Oh, the Oxford comma, that eyesore for the non-native English speaker!  ::)

Here, listening to Claude Helffer play Ravel. Even if it is not mentioned in the front cover, the disc also includes the Valses nobles et sentimentales, the Pavane pour une infante défunte and various shorter pieces.

Have you noticed that DG have just released Helffer's first recording of Boulez's second sonata? I like it very much.

Thanks for the tip, Mandryka. I have that recording of the Boulez Deuxième sonate and the Berg Sonata —but minus the Milhaud work— on CD (from a limited Japanese pressing). It is indeed very good. Great cover, too.

Thanks. Previously I had sampled this recording and sounded very good to me:
