Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Decided to try the Concerto for Four Wagner Tubas. The best part is the sound of the tubas themselves, which blend and interact beautifully and sound as rich and glorious as they do in Wagner (or Bruckner).

Unfortunately, as a composition, the inspiration level is low. The first movement starts with the tubas introducing a motif, and then that same motif is repeated and developed for 9 minutes without any particular structure, dynamic changes, or narrative arc. The monochromatic string orchestra accompaniment doesn't help: you'd think that would be a good idea to help the tubas stand out, but it just underlines how few thematic ideas the composer has. The finale has a cheesy Hollywood populism to its optimism that feels even more superficial.

Quote from: Leo K. on November 18, 2024, 05:34:25 AM I finding a new love for Karajan's Bach.

I'm usually a devotee of HIP/PI in Bach, but I have this in the Karajan 70 box and recently put it on. I was expecting to cringe at it's excesses, but I was pleasantly surprised, especially by the opening Kyrie eleison. It was simply luminous. Nothing like what Bach expected to hear, maybe a dream he might have after an evening of excesses - too much beer and bratwurst.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

Hindemith, Sonata for solo viola, Op 25, No 1, van Els

This performance is considerably slower than the others I listened to recently, Kashkashian and Power. It gives the music a heightened lyricism and sensuality. I remember getting this release for the Milhaud but the Hindemith is a great, unexpected bonus.

Very enjoyable. I like Kitayenko very, very much.

OK I'll break it out. I don't recall thinking much of it.

Mozart: Piano Sonata No. 3 in B flat, K281, Piano Sonata No. 4 in E flat major K282

More magic from Fujita. These sonatas just seem to come without baggage in his hands, and simply are. And the spontaneity of his playing really makes the heart dance. An absolute joy.

New recordings of the Rozsa Violin Concerto do not appear too often. Rattle does the Rozsa, Edusei the Bartok.

EDIT: This Rozsa is 33 minutes, compared to Heifetz' 27, McDuffie's 31, and Khitruk's 32. It also has live music sonic defects (lots of breathing by the soloist).

Wonderful to know that Miklos Rozsa's Violin Concerto is still attracting interest!
