Der lächelnde Schatten

#125885
I'm going to do something that I haven't done in ages --- listen to all six of the Nielsen symphonies -

NP:

Symphony No. 1 In G Minor, Op. 7, FS 16
Danish National RSO
Michael Schønwandt

From this set -

I'm going to listen to this entire Schønwandt cycle as I feel it's the most consistent as far as complete cycles are concerned. Oramo's would be my second choice as most consistent, but I feel let down by his performance of the 5th. Anyway, looking forward to getting reacquainted with these symphonies. As a bonus, I'll probably end up playing the Schønwandt companion disc of concerti (although this disc appeared on the Chandos label and not Dacapo).

Sibelius, Symphony #3 Maazel, Pittsburgh (Sony 1992)
I got this disc used many years ago, and unfortunately it has some scratches but they don't affect the 3rd symphony, and I don't care enough about the fillers although right now the "swan" and the first mvmt of Karelia still played without problems.

Listening on headphones at work, it's clear that Qobuz' remastering has been "messed with" - you can actually hear the choir jumping artificially from right channel to left at times.

I have the CD and could check how the choir sounds there.
FWIW, Abbado has recorded a similar disc later for Sony (not full overlap) and at least some of the pieces another time as filler for the "Pictures" on DG (but I don't know that one). He apparently was really fond of that stuff.

Revisiting the disc pictured below, which made a very favourable impression when I bought it last year.

I'm glad to say that I'm liking it as much this time around as when I first listened to it...
