A wonderful disc. All 4 works here are extremely well-crafted, even the light Sanssouci suite, a faux baroque confection (Sanssouci was the summer residence of the King of Prussia) .

The tone poem Song of the Tower Watchman is a brooding, agitated work, the Wiener Sinfonie a beautifully structured, compact symphonic work. The flute concerto is melodious and frothy. Throughout I got the impression that Graener never puts a foot wrong. All his works (as evidenced also by those included in the CPO Graener series) are compact, well-built, with no unnecessary effect. Not a note is wasted, and not a second of the listener's time either.

Oh my word.....I am in heaven surely. About the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. My favourite Requiem (by any composer) and really my favourite sacred vocal work of any composer. What an astonishing performance. A great big thank you to @Der lächelnde Schatten for your can't miss recommendation. And now, I pay it forward and highly recommend it to those who are curious about it. :) And one of the best quality product packaged double discs you can find. It will make you feel like royalty!

Quote from: Florestan on March 25, 2025, 07:15:19 AMI'm absolutely fine now, it was nothing serious, just a few hours of arrhythmia which necessitated chemical conversion. A most unpleasant feeling, though, to feel your heart beating as a polyrhythmic drum.

Good to hear that it could be treated easily. :)

This is the performance to own of The Spirit of England. I liken it to Janet Baker's performance of Sea Pictures. For me, there hasn't been anyone that challenges Cahill in this work.

I'm sure @Elgarian Redux knows this Cahill/Gibson performance.

It must be good! Another recording of one of my favorite Langgaard symphonies is very welcome.
