Der lächelnde Schatten

Now playing Honegger String Quartet No. 1

I'll probably end playing Honegger's three SQs over the course of today and tomorrow. These are inspired works that are most definitely worth your time. Honegger is a composer whose stature only continues to grow in my estimation.

Quote from: Henk on May 26, 2025, 01:10:50 PMCompleted listening to the piano album. Gorgeous music, a keeper. The PC is more late-romantic to my ears and doesn't really spark my interest. I've listened to a performance by Ewa Kupiec.
Quite a remarkable figure Paderewski having also been prime-minister of Poland.

I see, I didn't know that late-Romanticism wasn't your thing. Anyway, glad you enjoyed that Hyperion disc.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

A generously filled disc with 5 string trios by Johann Nepomuk David. This is serious, stern music overall, and very contrapuntal. The trios opp. 33 Nos. 1 and 2 and in G major didn't elicit much interest on me, unlike the opp. 33 Nos 3 and 4 which I felt more succulent and satisfactory. These trios often reminded me of the seriousness one hears in Hindemith, but lacking the spark of his genius.

By this composer, the symphonies 2 and 4 have interested me the most so far.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

A rather splendid account of this oft-recorded masterwork.

Respighi: Chaconne for violin, strings and organ after Vitali, La Boutique Fantasque and Prelude and Fugue in D major after Bach

The Chaconne is a great arrangement of a masterpiece. It should be better known. A very moving work.

La Boutique Fantasque inhabits the opposite side of the spectrum, fun aplenty. Respighi's masterful sense of orchestration fully displayed, likewise in the Prelude and Fugue.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Der lächelnde Schatten

Now playing Silvestrov Symphony No. 4 for strings and brass

Last works for the night --- now playing this entire Strauss Ashkenazy recording

Ashkenazy doesn't get mentioned much as a Strauss conductor, but I think he's fabulous in this music.

Martinu: Symphonies 3 and 4

I did remember how gripping the 3rd is and it always manages to leave quite an impression. One of my favorites. The 4th receives a tremendous performance too, although the cymbals sounded a tad shy.
