Resistance is futile and you know it only too well. You'll probably push the button in the next 24 hours.

Vivaldi

Longe mala, umbrae, terrores, RV 629
O qui caeli terraeque serenitas, RV 631

Laura Polverelli (mezzosoprano according to the liner notes, doing what are officially "contralto" works) is not the best singer, but to be honest I knew that going in. Anke Herrmann (soprano) is somewhat better though not totally secure.

So thus far decent, but not really great if I'm honest. For 5 out of 6 motets on this album, I already have recordings from the Hyperion series of sacred music which I should compare at some point.

BUT... the cover is lovely and this second-hand copy is in very fine condition.  ;D

The tease consists of it being one of the volumes I haven't yet secured. Though there are some copies out there at not-totally-horrific prices.

Wikipedia and/or Hyperion seemed to think RV 628 is incomplete, but it's here in the Naive edition and I've not yet seen anything in the liner notes to say that there's reconstruction involved.

THREAD DUTY:

Vivaldi
Concerto in C 'for the feast of Saint Lorenzo', RV 556
Clarae stellae, scintillate, RV 625

Yes, this is rather better. Better recorded, I think, and certainly Sara Mingardo strikes me as a better singer. I actually had notes from years ago saying this was one of the volumes I liked best out of the earlyish part of the edition.

I best keep listening, seeing how I expect entire operas on my doorstep tomorrow.

EDIT: Okay, the actual Stabat Mater itself is marvellous. Mingardo is perfect for it.

Finishing up my Dvorak listening today with selections from the two symphony boxes below - what's left after years of culling -  ;D  Both top choices in Ionarts listing (put together by Jens); also, Hurwitz's top two cycle choices (of course if you want to believe in him -  ;) )  Dave

Came across him looking at Empfindsamkeit, which I found by looking at Gallant, and I selected him because he had the most badadd name. 8)
