Stürmisch Bewegt

The eagle has landed (oops, that remark may not have been in the best of taste...).  Anyway, rec'd at last my Cantelli box and have begun my listening with, of course, his Franck symphony, which I esteem beyond all other performances of it.  This will occupy me for some time.  I was struck when - looking over the repertoire covered therein - how 'warhorsey' the sum total of his recordings were, with just a coupla exceptions.  Unsure if that reflects his labels' commercial intent or his or both... I can say I really hate it when Sirènes is dropped from recordings of Debussy's Nocturnes as here.

Frantisek Ignac Antonin Tuma.
Stabat Mater.

Jan Dismas Zelenka.
Sanctus-Agnus Dei.
Sub Tuum Praesidium.

Collegium 1704,Vaclav Luks.

I had this weekend a power overload in my house effectively destroying much of my Equipment. I have some left, but not much.
Still I am healthy....
A really fine recording.....

Commiserations, Harry!  Hopefully, some units can be repaired!   :'(

A power surge? You can get surge protection equipment but I'm not sure whether it's all effective, I keep meaning to look into it. Very bad luck though, I'm sorry to hear it because I know you had some nice kit.

Still, chin up. You have your health and getting replacement equipment could be fun.

Some Florent Schmitt this afternoon chez ritter:

The ubiquitous La tragédie de Salomé gets a top-notch performance by Mrs. Falletta and her Buffalo forces: vigorous , rhythmically alert and full of detail. Among the best I've hear, actually.

Let's see how the rest of the CD turns out: two world première recordings (Musique sur l'eau for soprano and orchestra, and Légende in its version for violin and orchestra), plus a work, Oriane et le Prince d'Amour know in it full ballet form, but not the suite given here.

I had surge protection, but that did not help against this disaster. Getting new equipment is fun, but as I said that amounts to nearly 80.000 euro's, and thats not readily available.  :( :( :(
So I hope I can repair some of it.

How could this happen? The only time I got some equipment damaged (a clock) was during a thunder with a lightning strike very near the house. I had fortunately disconnected my HIFI equipment about 10 minutes earlier. For that reason I - since then - always disconnect my equipment during thunders or when I'm not at home and when I sleep at night.

A walk on the path of sorrow, for it has cost me half my life to get this equipment together.....

Jan Zach.
Requiem Solemne.
Vesperae de Beata Virgini.

Musica Florea, Marek Stryncl.

Micheala Srumova, Soprano & Sylva Cmugrova, Alto, should be boiled in their own pudding and eating it too,, for offending my ears this much. In the whole series of music from 18th Century Prague this one for me is a bummer.

Yes, I'm going to investigation surge protection devices - I've heard that the ones you buy from DIY sheds aren't effective, but some may be.

I guess there was a fast high peak into the net, around 280 volts. Anyway later this week I will know more how much is damaged, and if it is repairable. But I am at a loss what happened. I came into my listening room and living room, and the Amps and a few other pieces had a loud hum, that would not go away. Although I had the power on, but no sound came out of the speakers.

Right, what brand? Did it effect sound quality? Did you have a lightning strike?

(This post is like the Spanish Inquisition! Sorry.)

The brand I have no idea, it was installed by combined disciplines. IT  and Hifi specialists, and their electricians. To insure that there is no negative effect on sound, it was tested before it was installed. However the fuses were not triggered, and I have no idea why. No lightning strike.

I thought the fuses were intended to protect against such events. Usually it's only lightnings they don't stand.

Yes, hence my surprise. So a lot of people will be over the floor the coming days, to find out, what caused this mayhem.

That's an awful shame Harry, I hope it's just blown a few components that can be replaced.
