Vasks is not an Estonian but a Latvian composer (and one I should probably check out one of these days). Tubin was the second Estonian composer I ever heard after Arvo Pärt and so far I'm two for two with composers of that country, as both are excellent. Need to hear more.

Haha. Thank you! I knew that, as per some of my recent posts. I am losing the plot, clearly.

Agreed. Me too 🙂

Coppélia.

Apart from the sheer melodiousness of the music, the snazzy performance from Bonynge and the sumptuous sonics, one's got to love these slim Decca boxes. There's 4 cds in there, almost 5 hours of music in a classy, sturdy cardboard box barely thicker than a single plastic cd case. With a nifty libretto, too !

Yes! I've got this set somewhere. I should dig it out. But, yes, Decca used to make some nice box sets.

First-Listen Wednesday

Tchaikovsky
String Sextet In D, Op. 70, "Souvenir De Florence"
Borodin Quartet (w/ Yury Yurov and Mikhail Milman)

Symphonic Addict

Symphony for piano and orchestra (Piano Concerto No. 2)

Quite fascinating. It's written in a Neoclassical idiom with some modern touches. Looks like Toch didn't want to be sentimental in this work (and in others), but the slow movement has inevitably a little of it, though in a somewhat desolate fashion.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

I have it in the new super jumbo Bonynge box, with no libretto and only the most general of booklet notes, but original cover art and tons of super fun music packed in there. Gosh that's a fun one to explore.

NP:

Tchaikovsky
Violin Concerto in D, Op. 35
Batiashvili
Staatskapelle Dresden
Barenboim

I'm doing my best not to turn this into an all-Tchaikovsky night, but it looks like it's heading in that direction.

But, wait...I can stop the madness with this, which I'll play next:

Rachmaninov
Symphonic Dances, Op. 45 (arr. for two pianos)
Ashkenazy/Previn

Creepy!! Ligeti is one of those avant-garde composers whose style I can enjoy regardless the work.

Same here. I think he's one of the best post-war composers who wrote in an avant-garde style. Other favorites would be Scelsi, Boulez and Takemitsu (although there is a streak of tradition that runs through some of his music).

I barely know some of their works. I still need to venture further with these composers.
