Bacewicz: Violin Concerto No. 3

Fantastic composer, fantastic work and fantastic soloist and orchestra. What could go wrong?

I have heard the 7th VC is the best. Do you agree?
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

There's only about another 2 versions I want to try after this...

A good performance, I just wish Suitner had taken the repeat in the third movement Scherzo.

If you hadn't told me there was supposed to be one I might have been blissfully unaware... Frankly I think early Dvorak can bear some cuts, at least. Whether that's one of the cuts I would want, I've no idea.

I think this is the best of the 3 I've listened to so far (Rowicki, 80s Neumann and Suitner).

Preise dein Glücke,Gesegnetes Sachsen BWV 215

"Was mir Behagt, ist der Muntre Jagd BWV 208" ( Hunt Cantate)

What a stunningly beautiful performance, these Bach Cantatas with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightment.
The ideas that were recorded in the Telefunken have completely crystallized here.
No technical imperfections here, but a wonderful view of what the cantatas still had to come to full maturity, but was present in every fiber.
Very convincing and full of zest for life but not over the top.
Very enjoying and uplifting.

Cage: Solo with Obbligato Accompaniment of 2 Voices in Canon, and 6 Short Inventions on the Subject of the Solo (version for 3 alto recorders)

Trio Dolce

Nice catchy title .. the music has something of an untouched-by-human-hand aura about it, that's most engaging.

For the first symphony, in the first movement, Kertesz observes all repeats. It clocks in around 19 minutes. I don't know if there are other conductors who have done so for the first movement, but I don't think it is the norm.

I have nothing by Bainton on my shelves, Jeffrey. I see he has a pretty hefty discography with Chandos as well as Dutton pitching in.

Current listening: Maconchy 5th String Quartet.

Bainton's And I saw a New Heaven is a staple of Anglican choirs, I've lost count how many times I've sung it.

So what is it, five pieces or one sonata?

To confuse matters further I see that Dalberto (who plays it very nicely) says the last three pieces of the sonata are separated as three klavierstücke in some sort catalogue raisonnée (O E Deutsch)

I'm in the camp of liking the 1st symphony, but I realize it's not the work of a mature composer, but I like it anyway. :)

I never said I didn't like Dvorak's 1st! ;)

True, but it seems pretty commonplace for many listeners to trash it. Good to see you enjoy it, too. 8)
