Shostakovich, 24 Preludes and Fugues op.87, nearly halfway through Colin Stone's rendition.

Currently heading for a middle-to-upper ranking, I think...
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Klavier

Powerful yet relatively melodic music that is well played and recorded.

I have those two sets.  And, yes they are special!  ;D

You might want to read this (new article to me though I knew some of the story):  https://english.radio.cz/sir-charles-mackerras-his-love-czech-music-8074478  He was at one point in time head of the Czech and Slovak Music Society in the UK (and from there into the rest of the world me thinks).  :)  You're on the right track (if I might say that).   ;) And you can also google his involvement in terms of introducing Czech music to the UK too.

Enjoy, and savor, the journey!

Best wishes,

PD

Read the article... how fascinating that his association with Czech music almost completely by chance, by someone seeing him perusing a Dvorak score!

Jiri Belohlavek

Amazing music, great performance!
So much great music, so little time...

Madiel

I always find it weird seeing mentions of Mackerras. It's quite the Australian family with diverse interests, and I used to kind of know one of his nephews.

Still jumping around the big box.  Disc 48, some Schubert.  It's of Grumiaux quality.

An embarrassment of riches! Grumiaux along with his partner Sebok owns the Franck sonata, my favourite recording by him but there are many more. Cultured perfection.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

This CD was a revelation to me.

Stradella: Concert Stradella [Paillard]

The string playing and presentation of the string works sounds quite dated now and does not do the greatest justice to the string works on this album, I feel, but the brass playing in the relevant works sounds quite fresh,  bright and very engaging throughout.

New acquisition.

Joachim Raff.

Overture to; Dame Kobold, Abends, König Alfred, Die Eifersüchtigen.
Prelude to Dornröschen.
Symphony No. 4 "Lenore".

Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Neeme Järvi.

Outstanding in every respect.

for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Looks like a lovely recording. I need to explore Petrassi's work. Anyway, I hope you feel better.

I haven't heard the Belohlavek recordings, but glad that you're enjoying them.  I have the set with Neumann and also a wonderful recording of No. 4 with Turnovsky on Supraphon.  :)

Oh, interesting!  How did you happen to meet/know the nephew?

Oooh!  That does look like a yummy set Irons!  I have some of his recordings...like you, I love that Franck recording and have it on an Eloquence CD of French and Belgian violin sonatas.

Pounds the table! Glad to see you enjoying Martinů's music. He is an incredible composer and favorite of mine since I started to seriously listen to classical music in 2008.

I'll have to revisit his music.  Some years ago, I purchased his "Seven Last Words from the Cross" but haven't played it since.  Poking around upstairs, I did run across a CD that I had found used for a good price which I need to check out.  It's a recording of his second symphony along with a couple of other works on BIS.

Schmitt: Psaume XlVII [Martinon]

This is a choral work on a large scale; full orchestra, full mixed choir with solo soprano and organ.  Even in the more calm and peaceful sections it is a powerhouse of drama and tension. The delivery of the solo soprano part [Andréa Guiot] is emotional, powerful and heartfelt. This is a big and emotionally charged work in every way.

Maw: Life Studies [Marriner]

This music, atonal by nature, is a set of eight studies written for an ensemble of 15 string instruments. I like the musical language, the various tones, drama and tensions in the music and also the sense of a lightness of texture which can be quite atmospheric with this particular music due to its clarity of presentation. This music is most interesting and engaging. I find it to be exciting.

Not earthshattering music, but kind to the ears and all other senses. It is sad that he is totally forgotten, but thanks to Toccata and his grandson, three volumes were produced, and I for one am very happy about that.

I love this composer, and Järvi makes a very strong case for him in this SACD recording. Magnificent performances.
