Disc one.

Now that's quite the rarity. I never knew he wrote SQs. How are they?

A superb rendition of Mozart's earliest SQs (which are actually great works in their own). Excellent performance, SOTA sound.

I wrote the post below five years ago.  It accurately sums it up.

An absolutely stupendous live performance of the Rachmaninov with Argerich in thrilling form and Chailly providing excellent support. The Tchaikovsky with Kondrashin is also pretty fabulous, though there are two other Argerich performances available to choose from, neither of which I've heard.

This set is a real sleeper. I think it's been oop for years, but maybe it will resurface one day.

Martinů: Nonet

Though written in the last year of his life (1959), this is an energetic, life-affirming work which breathes youthful optimism and doesn't fall into the trap of repeating motives from previous works of his. A really nice discovery for me, and one of the highlights of his chamber oeuvre IMO.

The Martinů Nonet is, simply, brilliant!

Glazunov: The Seasons [Serebrier]

I find winter very evocative and rather upbeat for the "dead" season. It is quite sparkling in places. Spring is short but very lyrical and expansive, with a suitably optimistic tone. Summer is joyful, jubilant, restful and that coda is wonderfully expansive and airy. Autumn opens with quite the Bacchanale, reaping the benefit of the fertile summer. The final movement opens with a somewhat disconcerting tone, perhaps portentous of the oncoming winter or it is simply the drunken revellers getting the last of the autumnal liquid juices.
