Satie, Erik (1866-1925) - Piano Music w/ Jean-Yves Thibaudet (5-disc set in a convenient 2-CD jewel box) - don't have much else, another 2-CD set in the middle below and a 2-disc set from the late 60s w/ Satie's works orchestrated - some reviews attached for those interested.  Dave :)

This can be got from Amazon MP for under $30

It does not contain a complete performance of Vexations, but I suspect that would vex very few people.

Andrei Eshpai
Concerto for trumpet, piano, vibraphone, and double bass
Piano concerto no. 2
Symphony no. 7
USSR State Large Symphony Orchestra
Yevgeny Svetlanov

(on Spotify)

A highly variable disc for me - I quite enjoyed the concerto for various instruments; a fun piece, with elements of neoclassicism and jazz. I was much less impressed by the other two selections; the iffy sound (typical of many Soviet-era recordings) didn't help.

Regarding Eshpai, I'm not intimately familiar with his output, but I can strongly recommend his 2nd and 5th Symphonies as well as his Songs of the Mountain and Meadow Mari for orchestra.

Yeah, Khachaturian's Piano Concerto is an impressive work.

Out of curiosity, what's your favorite recording, John?

Alwyn: Symphony #3
Hickox: LSO

I believe that this is my first time listening to this composer's work. I really enjoyed it. I don't remember the melodies, but it was constantly interesting, even when he only used 4 notes. I'll need to listen to this again soon.

Probably the one I was listening to last night with Orbelian/Järvi on Chandos, but I also like the one with Dora Serviarian-Kuhn and Tjeknavorian on ASV.

A very plain, sober approach. Charming in its way.

These Psalms are not the most accessible music, but most rewarding.  :)

You know what Que, I anticipated this as well, but found them to be highly accessible. It surprised me, because after three times listening to the whole set, I was of the same opinion as you, but I finally cracked the code, listening for the Fourth time to all the books, and as by a miracle the music started to flow. Frankly I cannot get enough of those Psalms. :)

They are an important highlight in Sweelinck's œuvre.
Reading the texts while listening helped me a lot to crack them.  :)

This turns out to be a must have.
Probably Brilliant just printed De Luca's self made and online published recordings.
Which, unlike with his slap-dash Graupner cycle, doesn't bother me here at all.

A really terrific performance of Stravinsky's Firebird in excellent analogue sound. The Mussorgsky is a bit too polite for my taste.

Finishing the day with CD 4, an assortment of polkas and overtures by Johann II. Boskovsky could no wrong in this repertoire.

Thats's a great set --- and indeed Boskovsky turned into gold everything he touched.

It's so fun and refreshing to think that in their times and places Johann Strauss and Rossini were considered modern, even avant-garde composers.  :D

Bach - Bachianas

The highlight of this set for me is undoubtedly a composition by Johann Christoph Bach. "Meine Freundin, du bist Schön", it is a very appealing piece that is sung superbly by Maria Zedelius and other vocalists. The tembre of her voice is perfect for this repertoire. The sometimes whirling playing of the ensemble is also a bonus.
