First listen to this new recording of William Levi Dawson's "Negro Folk Symphony." The Linn engineers have not quite figured out what seems to be quite a reverberant, cavernous acoustic, so I had to turn up the volume several times and feel I probably did not hear a lot of important detail in the first 5-6 minutes or so.

Now that I have adjusted, it seems to be a loving performance. George Walker's "Lyric" and William Grant Still's Symphony No. 1 are also on the disc.

Just astonishing musicality and technique - he makes it sound like great poetry. Hamelin was a great great Lisztian when he was younger.

I was very disappointed with this disc.  I really wanted it to be good - intelligent coupling of interesting repertoire, good orchestra, label with a good reputation for technical excellence.  But just everything is limp - but the recessed sound is the worst thing.  The orchestra plays well because that's what orchestras can and do these days but even they sound under-engaged.  Jarvi's Chandos recordings of both main works still sound much more vibrant than here.

The CD is defective and needs returning. I'm enjoying the pieces via YouTube, though, PD!

That's a fine set Danny; from the same forces who introduced me to Magnard's symphonies.

Time I investigated the Magnard - never been on my radar beyond saving them in a playlist. Recommended starting point, Jeffrey?

Sorry to hear about the CD having problems.  I wonder if it might have been scratched and then resurfaced?  That can cause problems.  Glad to hear that you like the performances however.  :)

Szymanowski Symphony #1 and the Concert Overture

https://www.youtube.com/v/d3EWpHP8y_I

This might be described as the child of Schoenberg's Kammersinfonie #1 and Webern's Passacaglia   :o ??? .    A wonderful and powerful piece!
Interesting description. :) I agree Szymanowski's Symphony No. 1 is a splendid work, really inspiring and astonishingly beautiful (thanks for having reminded about it!). More than the Chamber Symphony No. 1, I would say Verklärte Nacht, like that schönbergian piece, it shows clear wagnerian reminiscences (and a rich contrapuntal texture), especially influences of Tristan und Isolde. But it's just a personal impression.

The Plasson set is very good and has a few orchestral pieces beyond the four symphonies (of which I recall the 3rd and 4th having a more distinctive style). I also enjoyed the Sanderling set on BIS, which struck me as a little more classical in approach to the music. I seem to recall the Ossonce set on Hyperion making a somewhat weaker impression. Any of them would be a fine place to start.

Let's not forget that Stokowski also recorded the Dawson Symphony:
