Quote from: Dry Brett Kavanaugh on November 10, 2022, 07:33:45 PMHow do you like them, Todd?

The Prokofiev is excellent, the Szymanowski is good.

After reading a few pages in Elgar's biography- the anecdote about composer/pianist Arhur de Greef - "the dancing flamingo":

https://www.youtube.com/v/1VQ3a0NTnDU

Apparently de Greef had a curious way of moving his body and throwing up his hands at the end of the phrases, resembling a tall bird.
The members of the LSO couldnnt help laughing and Elgar had to bite his lip every time he opened the score...
In 1915 Elgar and the LSO toured several cities in the north of Great Britain.

It is a light, very traditional & virtuoso work.

This rare video is really enlightening...

Here's de Greef's first concerto:

Lyrita celebrating 50 years of British Music.
Set Two.
CD IV.
Complete Works by: VW, Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, fast but gorgeously done by Boult and the LSO, not a sentimental display of drama or long drawn-out syrupy emotionalism. Walton. Music for Children, conducted by Walton himself with the LPO, Warlock, An Old song for small orchestra, Grace Williams, Ballads for Orchestra, Malcolm Williamson, Overture "Santiago de Espada.
And finally Wordsworth Third Symphony, second movement.

I could not resist following the third CD up with the last in this box. After all the music is enticing and inviting and open for discovery, the last thing being a huge draw in. Always good performances and sound, that much is almost guarantied with Lyrita.

Amiss of me not to mention most of the Lyrita catalogue was also recorded at the Kingsway Hall.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

That's true, but I never heard anything untoward
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Some new arrivals from across the pond:

Martinu, Bohuslav - w/ Tomas Netopil and the Prague RSO.

Mozart, WA - Cassations & Divertimento KV 205 - already own these w/  Sandor Vegh & the Camerata Salzburg Orchestra, but Kuijken and the La Petite Bande will be a nice duplications!   Dave
