Another fine interpretation of these cantatas. Its the first time in my life that they touch me much deeper as ever before. Maybe age has something to do with that. To say it with the words of this cantata "Was Gott tut, das ist Wohlgetan".
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

The new erato

Never been a great Glazunov fan, but I found this set (recently played in its entirety) to be both very pleasant music, well played and extremely well recorded.

I played that complete set several times now, and still have the feeling and urge that I must yet again listen to it. Tis a strange attraction.

Spotted Horses

Having completed listening to this release, I an only reiterate that it is utterly exquisite! The poignant dissonances that unfold in Albinoni's counterpoint are to die for.

CD 2

Never before have I heard the cantata BWV 151 as beautifully as in this recording with Ton Koopman.
Let yourself be carried away by the sweet-voiced tones of the traverso that circles you as a garland

Dimitri Shostakovich.
CD X.
Symphony No. 14.
6 Poems of Marina Tsvetaeva.
Julia Varady, Soprano.
Ortrun Wenkel, Contraalto.
Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, Baritone.
Concertgebouw Orkest, Bernard Haitink.

Somehow for the first time in my life I was in the mood for the vocal works by Shostakovich, suddenly it came over me, so Babi Yar, Symphony No.14, and the Poems are premieres for me. Ignored those works for as long as I have listened to classical music, so that means 50 0dd years.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,

76/2.  Punchy, vibrant, quick.  The close recording allows one to hear the tiniest of details, including ultra-brief unison playing in a couple spots, and some tiny gestures from the first violinist especially.  Nice.

John of Damascus, op. 1

Moscow State Chamber Choir
Russian NO - Mikhail Pletnev (rec. 2000)

I don't know John of Damascus at all. I almost wrote it off as too conservative, but Taneyev's work ends up quite powerful.

Figured since Taneyev's 20-minute first cantata won me over, I would move on to his second:

Sergei Taneyev
At the Reading of a Psalm, op. 36

Lolita Semenina - soprano / Marianna Tarassova - alto
Mikhail Gubsky - tenor / Andrei Baturkin - bass

St. Petersburg State Academic Capella Choir
Glinka Choral College Boys Choir
Russian NO - Mikhail Pletnev (rec. 2003)

I found this 70-minute work a mixed bag with uneven soloists. Great first half, though.

I don't know if Svetlanov's would make a difference.

Pitch: A=471 Hz, at 15 degrees.
Temperament: Neidhardt II, 1724.

Already in a previous review I vented my opinion about this recording (22-11-2022) and I have nothing to add.

Sort of an afterthought in my recent download purchase, this recording is quite remarkable.  It sounds beautiful start to finish, and never more so than when the women sing.  The harmonies approach Morales levels of aural intoxication.  Maybe there's something in the water in Spain that inspires such beauty.  I hope to get to Victoria's massive Passion this weekend to test that pseudo-hypothesis.
