I have played the complete box many times already, and still discover new things. Its on the roll for 2023 again. Marvelous performances.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

#82901
Antonin Dvorak.
CD 6.
Symphonies No. 8 and 9.
Oslo PO, Mariss Jansons.

Brilliant EMI sound, and top notch performances of both Symphonies by the Oslo PO.
Must make note of looking out for more Dvorak by Jansons.

Weinberg: Symphony No.7 - I hadn't realised how good this one is. It starts off in the searching spirit of the 6th symphony.
My daughter and her husband are going to Canada for Christmas to be with his family, so we had Christmas a few days early and I was presented with the Weinberg and Rachmaninov CDs which I have been playing today:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Good to have such family who gives you music, at least you have some comfort being without your daughter and husband. :)

Played this one recently, found it to be very good, especially the high pure voice by Dorothee Mields. Britta Schwarz was most of the time enjoyable. But what fine music Telemann wrote huh?

Thanks Harry - what you say is true.  :)

Carl Nielsen.
Orchestral music and Chamber music.
CD 7.
Clarinet Concerto.
Wind Quintet.
Serenata in vano.
John Kruse, Clarinet, Cecile Boiffin, Side drum.
The Czech Chamber PO, Douglas Bostock.
Scandinavian Chamber Players.

To be honest I never was a great fan of the Clarinet Concerto, and neither of the Flute Concerto to which I have listened recently. At times during the works there are beautiful moments, but as a whole the music does not appeal to me. He is experimenting too much around, and thus I feel uncomfortable with this musical side of Nielsen. The other works on this CD I find so so, neither fish nor flesh. My impression is that the works are well performed and recorded, but the music is not for me.

This is the third and final recording comprising this little big box, and each of the recordings can justify full price.  At $0.00 is was a great snag, as it would be at any other offer price.

This is the third Lionheart recording I have acquired via these boxes, and I will likely explore their output a bit more.  They fall just short of Chanticleer quality, but perfection is hard to achieve.  What they do achieve is highly satisfactory.

New Arrival.

Lelio Colista. (1629-1680)
10 Sinfonie a tre.
Ensemble Giardino di Delizie, Ewa Anna Augustynowicz.
Elisabetta Ferri, Organ, Harpsichord.
Organ: Paolo di Pietro di Montefalco, 1509. (No more technical info about this very old Organ)

In his time Colista was famous, really famous for his art as a composer and instrumentalist, and his services were in constant demand. Why he is forgotten is beyond my understanding, for his music is quite exceptional, with beautiful melodic lines, written well for all the instruments involved. A Jesuit Polymath Athanasius Kircher described the young Colista as the "Orpheus of the city of Rome", and me thinks he deserved that title well. Excellent performances and recording.

Music for Bass Viol.

Despite the fact that I neither knew the composer and the performers, I am pleasantly surprised and delighted, by the compositions and how well the instruments sound.
I bought this recording on a whim, because there was yet again a Brilliant sale. I did not see a few of those releases before, so I thought why not, and it paid off.
The instrumentalists are good, and there is real rapport between them and the music.
I am delighted.
