Good sound. D Steinway which sounds better at home than at least one prestigious London concert hall D Steinway.

In Romanian his name means musculos. You say things like: he is more brawn than brains. It is also a horrible dish of boiled bits of dead pig.

Why, thank you Howard! New words and expressions added to my English vocabulary.

Btw, next time you meet your Romanian friend Petru ask him whether he watched Aferim! (a Romanian movie) --- and no matter whether yes or no, you should watch that movie together --- and you should ask him to translate what is being said on the spot. I guarantee great fun!...  ;)

That is actually one of the most delicious Romanian pork specialties. Yummy, yummy!

It's called tobă and it's really delicious --- ask Petru!  ;)

The last installment of Marteau's chamber works. Not as engaging as the first two releases, but a fine disc all the same.

Just finished the second CD of this set, the Third and Fourth Symphonies

I've listened to this set only once, a number of years ago, and it didn't appeal to me. This time around I find it like this music, mainstream High Romantic stuff.

Just begun

The third and the fourth of the Quartets Dedicated To Haydn, K428 and K458 (aka The Hunt).

Janacek: Suite from 'The Cunning Little Vixen'
Respighi: Metamorphoseon

Peter Breiner did a most accomplised job by arranging these orchestral suites from Janacek's operas.

This still is the recording of Metamorphoseon to beat. An utterly impressive work, displaying Respighi's huge talent for orchestration, among other features. A firm favorite as far as orchestral variations are concerned, and he knew how to finish a work! A masterpiece in my view.

Symphonic Addict

Shostakovich: Suite from 'The Fall of Berlin' (arr. by L. Atovmyan)
Vaughan Williams: Five Tudor Portraits

Even on these socialist-realist scores, the genius of Shostakovich is absolutely evident. Many might call this music 'trashy'. I find it optimistic, invigorating and brilliantly written. In fact, it made me smile at times. The way he held the excitement in some parts is priceless.

I don't remember having heard this choral work by VW before, and it's a most superb composition. Quirky, lyrical, playful. A winner.

A first listen to this new Malcolm Arnold disc.....

Something of a "mixed all-sorts" disc filling in gaps in the Chandos/Arnold discography.  Except for the 1st Clarinet Concerto and the Philharmonic Concerto, pretty much only the 2nd recordings of the music so interesting for the Arnold fan.  Well played and well recorded although nothing that I would say is "vital" Arnold.  The Commonwealth Christmas Overture is just weird.  Starts as a film score/English dance celebration, goes ruminative for a minute or two, suddenly adds a Carribean Calypso - guitars and marimba to the for - and then cuts back to the introductory music.  Arnold conducted the only other version on this fine disc;

One of his very last (the last?) recordings he made and he takes a full 3 minutes longer than Gamba.  Because its Arnold its a must hear disc but hard not to feel that Gamba makes the right choice to keep things moving.....

Harmoniae Morales (20-53)

This is the last CD of this great (oop) set. There is  still a single CD available with so-called highlights.

To my utmost regret the seller on Bol.com did not take the effort to take both boxes from the site for they were sold quite some time ago. He will try to get them elsewhere, but that is a useless exercise me thinks. Thanks for alerting me to this Traverso, I appreciated that very much.
