I like the easy-going 14th very much.
Hardly know it! That is bad considering that I wrote some of the notes for that box set (although not for the 14th Symphony). Must listen again. I like the more modernistic 13th. What's your view on that one Lol?

Good morning all,

Some Bach Toccatas by Kooiman to start the day.

This really is a lovely disc. Perhaps there is nothing that is starkly original here, but the concerto is a gorgeously lyrical work with some beautiful melodies and the String Serenade is as enjoyable as those by Tchaikovsky and Dvorak.

ABQ 105.  I'm not an ABQ fan generally.  They play perfectly but at least what I've listened to tends to be very Emerson Quartety in that technical perfection can trump musical enjoyment.  Not so here.  The perfection is there, but so too is musical satisfaction.  Nary a note or dynamic shift sounds out place, which all the more impressive given that this is a live recording.

I'm curious about your avatar image Todd. Did a US space capsule land in your garden?  :)

I followed up with the three movement 23rd. Some lovely soaring melodies especially in the second. The finale a romp.
Next on my list will be the 13th then Jeffrey.

NYM Symphony 1 and Symphony 13
No.1 is quite Scriabinesque, characteristic but I found it rather academic, dense and a bit turgid.
No.13 from 1933 is a fine work and much more interesting. It's one of his most modernistic scores, at one point reminding me of the music of Carl Ruggles. It is in one movement of about 20 minutes and I play it often. It wasn't very well received at its Soviet premiere in 1934 and had to wait 60 years until it was performed again (in Wales in 1994). Fine performances from the Ural Youth SO under Alexander Rudin:

Excellent Lol. I hope that you read the booklet notes for No.23  ;D
It is one of the most immediately approachable of NYM's symphonies but still deeply-felt I think. I originally came across it in the record library on a fine old EMI/Melodiya LP coupled with Shchedrin's fine 1st Symphony.
I'll be interested to hear what you think of No.13 which I'm listening to for the third time today now.

That is the Owyhee Discovery Capsule, dating from 1932.  It is a restored excavation bucket from the construction of the Owyhee Dam, which served as a model for construction of the Hoover Dam.  It currently resides immediately downriver of the dam in a lush oasis park in the midst of a high desert canyon formed by the Owyhee River.  An additional interesting note, Owyhee is the 18th Century English spelling of Hawaii.  The area is named after three Hawaiin explorers who went missing in the area in the early 19th Century.

The Owyhee Canyonlands area, spread across Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada, is about the size of Massachusetts and has only three paved roads.  (Eastern Oregon is remote and lightly populated; for other examples, Wallowa County is the size of Delaware and has no stop lights, and Lake County is the size of New Jersey and has a population of about 8,000.)  This is the type of view one can expect in the northern part of Owyhee Canyon:

1 & 2.  I came to this via Natacha Kudritskaya partnered with Danial Rowland, who led the Brodsky for a dozen years.  Since I own the first Brodsky cycle, I did not bother with this initially, but under Rowland, the ensemble sounds rather different, more expressive, less sleek.  I like what I'm hearing.  I will have to work my way through the cycle.

A new Dvořák work for me.

I really enjoy the Eastern European soloists here, and I always thought the Garden State orchestra (nonetheless this US conservatory chorus) always played well above their pay grade, especially in Dvořák with Macal.
