The Roussel is rather uncomfortably tacked on at the end of a disc of operatic intermezzi and arias (Ella giammai m'amo from Don Carlo and Vous qui faites l'endormie from Faust, in wonderful performances by Boris Christoff, but is nonetheless a sparkling performance.

All recordings from 1949 to 1954.

Thought I'd revisit this after enjoying the music played on a clavichord so much yesterday. Asperen alternates canzonas and fantasias - the canzonas are given a light and dancing interpretation, even though some are pretty long in terms of elapsed time, and this contrasts with the way he treats the fantasias. I'll have a look at his notes later.

Quote from: JBS on January 20, 2023, 06:29:54 PMNow CD 6, the Fifth and Sixth String Quartets of Bazzini.

Written in the last half of the 19th century, but sometimes a bit conservative: the finale of the Fifth sounds somewhat like Haydn. Overall typical Romantic music making of good quality.
I've not listened to these, yet ....

What's conspicuously missing from this box is the Donizetti SQs and it's a pity, because he wrote about 16 and they have a surprisingly high quality (actually, not that surprising if one considers that Donizetti had the best musical education that could be had in Italy back then, having studied with Giovanni Simone Mayr).

Well, pulled out my modest collection (about 10 discs) of the composer below:

I'll give the second one a shot later this weekend.

Finishing up my CDs of the composer posted earlier w/ the top 3 recordings - BUT, thinking about the bottom three at JPC for new additions - Euro and $USD are about par and shipments to the USA get a few bucks off each recording.  Dave :)
