Morning listening on Spotify:

In this recording from his pre-Glossa days, Maletto does his usual thing with instrumental accompaniment. But this might be the first Maletto recording I quite like! The singing in this Ars Nova music from France is superb.

Irons

Stanley Bate: 3rd Symphony.

Bold and muscular, a tour de force.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Tubin: Symphony No. 10

Two formidable symphonies exceptionally played.

Two great choices Cesar! No.10 is my favourite of the later symphonies by Tubin and that's a fine recording of the Schmidt.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Malcolm Williamson 'Elevamini' (Symphony No.1). This is a nice collection of Williamson's music. This fine score reminds me, a bit, of Bernstein's 'Jeremiah Symphony':
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Good Morning Lol - that is one of my favourites - a marvellous work! I like the Chisholm 'Pictures from Dante' as well.

Inspired by Cesar's post on Schmidt, I'll try this piece I haven't listened to before (as well as all Schmidt's music in general, to tell the truth):

On youtube:
Franz Schmidt
Symphony No.4

Zubin Mehta & Wiener Philharmoniker

"You cannot expect the Form before the Idea, for they will come into being together." - Arnold Schönberg

VonStupp

#84847
Antonín Dvořák
My Home, Overture, op. 62
Hussite Overture, op. 67
In Nature's Realm, Overture, op. 91
Carnival, Overture, op. 92
Othello, Overture, op. 93

London SO - István Kertész (rec. 1966/67)

Aside from Carnival, this is all 'new' Dvořák to me.

A favourite for years, the Fourth being almost equally fine.
... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Traverso

Bach

Brandenburg Concertos BWV 1046-1047 & 1048

71 dB

DISC 2 of the Paillard J. S. Bach box: BWV 1063-5

No complaints. Good stuff!
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

RVW, symhonies no. 4 and 5 in some lesser known recordings (conductors Colin Davis and Neville Marriner). With excellent notes by one Jeffrey Davis":

Excellent 10th issue in the violin concertos series.  :)

Another top shelf Wagner disc from Szell.  Indeed, the Meistersinger Prelude is probably the best I've ever heard.  It's basically a crime that he did not record complete Wagner operas.
The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

Spotted Horses

Janacek, In the Mists, this time Thomas Ades.

Compared with the Barto recording I listened to yesterday, this is much more incisive, much less "impressionistic." I like it a lot. I got it because it was on super-sale at the Qobuz store (pointed out by Todd, I think). Glad I stumbled on it.

Quote from: k a rl h e nn i ng on January 27, 2023, 04:10:41 PMI've relatively recently come to enjoy much more Mendelssohn than I should previously have suspected. Indeed, I was just today listening to his first quartet.

His piano works don't sound like Mendelssohn. I will check the first quartet.
The video below is a weekend present to you. Have a nice weekend Karl!

Piano Concerto No. 2

Juhani Lamminmäki, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Juhani Lagerspetx (piano)

A fun piece. But I wish someone would record Klami's first (Roaring twenties 1924-25) concerto "Une nuit à Montmartre"
