Piano Trio 1 in B-flat Major, op. 23

Suk Trio (rec. 1977)

The most intensely played Dvořák I have heard since my traversal starting at the new year. An especially good thing since I didn't much care for the Piano Quartets from the (almost) same team. This is an exhilarating performance, though.

On the other hand, the Suk Trio makes my 12-some hours, spent over the past few weeks, with the Panocha Quartet playing Dvořák almost seem inconsequential. I know better though, for I enjoy their buoyant, unfettered joy in contrast.

Since I am iced in, I will probably move on to Trio 2 later today.

Iced in again today, so off to the next from the same recording:

Dvorak: Symphony No. 4 [Kertesz]

The first movement of Symphony No. 4 is ardent and assertive in tone. The strings are full and lush. However, the presentation has bite as the music is attacked and tension is built up well. There is also good drama and atmosphere.
The wonderful slow movement is beautifully played. Kertesz delivers the orchestral sonorities very well. The tone is meditative, pensive and lyrical but never bleak and the sound is full. The music is very well presented and there is the interesting sense of a cloud hanging over proceedings. The influence of Wagner's music is very apparent here.
The music in the Scherzo is energetic and electric and it is a wonderfully rowdy affair which is full of dance rhythms. Its delivery has heightened tension, drama and excitement throughout. It also has a wonderful Trio section.
In the Finale the first theme is repeated frequently but I like this and find it effective. Once again the music is attacked with some aggression which pays dividends in terms of excitement, intensity and drama. There is a beautifully lyrical second theme for contrast which is very well played.

Symphony no. 3 "in C" from 1961/63 stands out from these four with its truly clear, problem-free ease of form, playfulness and overall freedom of musical statement. The thoroughly optimistic character of this work, in which there are in principle no slow movements (in place of the 3rd movement is more of a playful and pleasing Aria in Allegretto moderato tempo), radiates from his music from the first to the last beat. The introductory movement is constructed in a well-arranged sonata form, linking on to Krejčí's favourite sparkling Scherzino with alternative Trio in the central section of the form, then followed by the above-mentioned Aria and effective and vital finale at Allegro molto speed to close the symphony. The premiere of the work was performed in 1964 by the Czech Philharmonic under the baton of Karel Ančerl.

Eclectic package of 6 CDs from Prestomusic arrived today - first three up for a listen:

Bartok, Bela - Concerto for Orchestra & Music For SPC w/ Mälkki and Helsinki PO - 10/10 Classics Today review HERE - have several older ones and will cull out my 1980s Dutoit. P.S. not pleased w/ the cardboard jacket, cheap for BIS.

Joplin, Scott - Piano Rags w/ William Bolcom - remastered 1988 recording - several excellent reviews attached (w/ a comparison to Rifkin & Hyman) - I've owned a single Rifkin CD since the '80s - a possible cull?

Raff, Joachim - Cello Chamber Works w/ Christoph Corisé & Oxana Shevchenko - urgent recommendation by Dubins and a breathing complaint by the AllMusic reviewer (attached) - coming up next so cannot comment yet.  Dave :)

Sibelius: Symphony No.2, Sixten Ehrling conducts the Royal Stockholm PO.
I think that this fine set (rec. 1952/3) was the first complete cycle under a single conductor.
PS Oh yes, I see that it says that on the front of the box!

Symphony No. 1 in D minor.
Symphony No. 4 in C major.
BBC SO, Paul Mann.

Already the Third volume in this series, and I grow quite addicted to Flury's music!
This Swiss composer is to my ears a very important and worthwhile composer. He is a good orchestrator, is brimful with good ideas, and never is repetitive. Creates out nothing everything. Tonal, with a neo romantic sweep, and involving warmth in abundance. Still Flury is not loved on GMG, or maybe he is thought to be a second tier composer, well be it as it may, he is not for me. I think him Grandiose.
Very good performance and sound.

More likely not known Harry - I don't think I've heard a note of his music.  But Toccata are really good at digging up deserving gems.  As I wrote on another thread earlier - there is nothing wrong in being a 2nd tier composer - 2nd tier is NOT the same as 2nd rate.  There is plenty of wonderful music written by 2nd tier composers!!

This is a binaural DSD64 recording. The playing is great, and the sound is extraordinarily realistic. The "dummy head" mic technique provides pinpoint imaging.

How did you like it, Jeffrey? I know you for more of a fan of the piece than I. I haven't heard any "singleton" recording of the piece, and I do like Polyansky's work.

Saw someone post this album a few pages ago, and I honestly couldn't remember if I had heard the works before. But the composers and artists are all so good, I had to listen and make sure.

Gorgeous.
