Tangentially, this is the first I've listened to the Butterworth on this disc.

Great disc. :)

Agreed, stupendous works, and looks like the same program as on the Supraphon disc. Curious coincidence.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

One of the most exciting (some would say "bombastic and banal"  ::) ) and mercilessly tuneful works I know.

Did you listen to the whole ballet?

Koechlin: Vingt Chansons bretonnes, for cello and piano, op. 115

Koechlin is a hit-and-miss composer to me. His music can sometimes be too much quiet, pensive and contemplative to the point of boring me, but certainly not here. These are quite interesting short pieces with varied moods and personalities. Le Vin des Gaulois, Saint-Efflam et le Roi Arthur, Les Laboureurs, Notre-Dame du Folgoat and La Chanson du pilote stood out.

I listened to the entire recording many times, but I haven't seen or watched the ballet. I saw 2 dvds of the ballet on Amazon USA. I will purchase them soon!

Quote from: Verena on April 22, 2023, 10:24:35 AMWhat's your impression of these recordings? On first listen I particularly like No 5. I think he is an excellent Bach player, I've also enjoyed his English Suite 6 on an earlier recording.

They sound more romantic and melodic than what I'm used to.  I think need more time to reach a verdict.

The notes say that the main influences for this piece are Brahms and Dvořák. I hear the Dvořak influence the most in the 2nd movement, where the main theme has a similar character to Song to the Moon.

What sounds on paper like extremely gnarly music (the violin concerto is based on a combination of eleven dodecaphonic series) is in fact slightly gnarly and extremely lyrical.
