Ms Richter's Monteverdi cycle is just splendid.  It looks like I will have to listen to more of her recordings.

Mozart: Symphony No. 38

Superb in every respect!

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Powerful account with thunderous timpani. Love it!

Edward Elgar: Cello Concerto in E minor, op.85. Alisa Weilerstein, Daniel Barenboim, Staatskapelle Berlin

Man this is a GREAT performance, of a work I didn't really care about until recently. Now I feel that this may be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Quote from: Spotted Horses on May 28, 2023, 09:37:02 AMWhat do you think of it? It's not the sort of thing I would normally associate with Tortelier. I must have the recording, because I have the big EMI box of Tortelier recordings.

It is the only recording I have and it sounds really fine to me,he certainly has a feeling for this Sonata

Quote from: Florestan on May 18, 2023, 06:14:28 AMI think I prefer this version to the Kodaly's, it's warmer and more involved; the latter are cooler and more aloof.

Yeah, I've never been particularly enthralled by the Kodaly Quartet's playing. There are numerous finer alternatives in the Haydn SQs, imho.

I have fond memories of this work, James! I recall a rather substantial and brooding slow movement.

What's remarkable about the Nivers here is that it's on such a colourful and deep instrument and yet is so moving and confidential, like a heartfelt confession.  It's like an instrumental motet! Well recorded too.

Starting the recently acquired Pierné box with CD1 (the first of 3 and half CDs dedicated to the complete piano music played by Diane Andersen).

I find Pierné's late Variations in C minor(which I was relistening to some days ago in another recording) very engaging, so wanted to explore his piano output further. The works in this CD are all from the 1880s as far as I can tell (the composer was in his twenties), but even at this stage of his career Pierné produced interesting stuff (even if it can be slightly academic).

Ms Lasaracina has got chops and has no difficulty hitting the notes.  The interpretation tends to sound fast, more focused on hitting notes than imbuing them with nuance, and as such, not as compelling as more preferred versions - eg, Block.

Second and third movements of Bruckner 6, Barenboim, Berlin

Generally positive impression. Good orchestral balance, but the recorded sound strike me as rather congested. I wonder where this was recorded, Berlin Philharmonia, or the tradition recording location, the Jesu-Christus church Berlin. I'm listening to a rip of the CD set and I don't have a scan of the booklet this time.

Note added: judicious googling reveals it was recording in the Berliner Philharmonie.

I don't think I'd heard this before (even though I think highly of the 2nd). This piece is a lot of fun, especially the 1st movement!

Very fun indeed, a favorite of mine, and a fine cycle from Beroff too!

New release that works for me. I'm pretty sure this was the live recording at which I was present. Almost always appreciate Manze.
