Martinu: Three Czech Dances for Two Pianos.

As they do Hindemith the Labéque sisters play the Dances with great vim and dexterity.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Awesome recording!  :)

Yeah; activity in the thread devoted to this composer sent me in his direction.   8)

Listened to Astrid Varnay singing in Wagner's Die Walküre.  It was a cheap Membran compilation originating from the Knappertsbusch 1957 Bayreuth performance. Excellent! I haven't listened much to Varnay so it appears as if there is a goldmine of historical recordings. Yay!  >:D

Astrid Varnay is the Brunnhilde in the 1955 Keilberth Bayreuth Ring Cycle (Testament). It is in stereo and well worth a listen.

These are actually rather good performances, taped at concerts given just about ten years before Vänskä embarked on his complete cycle with the Minnesota Orchestra.

I visited Venice thrice: the last visit was on my honeymoon, 10 years ago. I swear to you that each time I felt like coming home; if it were true that we live more than one life, then at least one of the previous ones must have been lived in Venice.  :D

Maybe it was. You might have been a Doge!

Oh, nice!  :)

Do you know if it is included in one of the box sets?

Once you get past all the pop style tricksy packaging, this is actually a really good version of Vivaldi's perennially popular work. On modern instruments, but Mutter doesn't over-romanticise the music and the Trondheim Soloists are an excellent accompanying band.

It is very enjoyable. The sound is a bit metallic, but it is easy to tune out. Do you like these performances, J Winter?

Yes, I've listened to about 1/4 of the box at this point, and I like it a great deal.  Marzendorfer in general has a bit more "pep" than Dorati; it's a shame these weren't more widely known at the time.  And the sound, for having been mastered from LP's, is frankly better than I expected, not bad at all.

Along a similar vein, the recordings in this 99 cent download from Amazon are well worth your time, if you haven't explored them... not a complete set but a generous sampling, mostly from the 60's with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and a lot of fun for a buck :)

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

Monteverdi

Not immediately my favorite recording but I have a soft spot for this performance. It is sparkling and lively with the great King's College Choir and Munrow and his companions.
My first was the one below with Jürgen Jürgens & Konrad Ruhland and his Choralschola Capelle Antiqua München (Telefunken)
This one was with Ledger was my second .

Currently unavailable alas. I wanted to order that some time ago, but it seems gone for an indefinite time.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.
