Zosha Di Castri: Tachitipo (Ekmeles/ JACK Quartet / Talea Ensemble / Lorraine Vaillancourt / ICE / Julia Den Boer / Diego Espinosa Cruz Gonzalez)

One of the most talented of today's younger composers, this is Di Castri's first commercial recording. Her first string quartet (included here, by the great JACK Quartet) was commissioned by the Banff International String Quartet Competition, and played by all the finalists that year. I heard it 5 or 6 times over the course of an afternoon (on the Banff livestream) and it held up quite nicely.

Prompted by a review by Johan Van Veen, I dug this one out again. And what a joy! He picks up on the negatives - the lower voices especially. Tod McComb also had reservations - in his case he was fretting about the tuning. But I think they can't see the wood for the trees. This is just beautiful singing of beautiful music, passionate and expressive.

It sounds good too, the stereo image is state of the art, at least through Krell and ESL.  I'm listening really nearfield, using these huge speakers and muscle amp almost like a pair of headphones! They're here, in my living room, singing just for me.

Perhaps the best CD in the Chandos cycle.

Hi Jeffrey,

the 4th is a great work indeed but I need to re-listen to 10 and 11 more attentively. they ended up as a sonic background.  0:)

It is indeed Olivier and I really like the concise and poetic No.10.

Unbelievably I heard No.3 live at the Proms this year - a great experience.

Very nice, Jeffrey. It's one of my favorite symphonies from Weinberg (along with the 5th and 6th symphonies).

Re-sampling this again to check if still enough interest for a purchase.

Thanks my friend. I like No.1 as well especially the 'triumph against the odds' conclusion.

My favourite Finzi CD!

And mine (LP :)).

Oliver, both Jeffrey and myself encouraged Baron ......(another who has joined alternative GMG wherever that is) to give a listen to Finzi's Dies Natalis. Don't know if he ever did but anyone remotely interested in Finzi should.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Lol,
I listened to Dies Natalis less than a couple of weeks ago based on a recommendation here. It didn't have as strong an impact on me as some of the works on this particular CD. Maybe another time.

Three concertos and two short works for orchestra commissioned by major orchestras (Cleveland, RCOA, LPO, Chicago) and played by powerhouse soloists and conductors (listed on the disc cover) attest to Turnage's status among contemporary composers. And yet his music is not met with universal acclaim. It fuses different styles, esp jazz, with classical. As a result he receives criticism from both ends of the spectrum. I can only vouch for what I hear, and I like his music a lot - most of the time. This disc is particularly appealing as a program, as it gives a rounded portrait of the composer's extensive output. Anyone wanting to sample Turnage will find this an excellent starting point.
