Traverso

Messiaen

This is not a Calliope recording but one of a later date (1995) on the organ of the church where Messiaen was an organist,

Grand Orgue de l'Église de la Trinité Paris

Madiel

Sibelius, Song of the Earth op.93

Hmm. The music is slightly grand and...pleasant. I wouldn't say this is a top-notch work. For one thing it's held back by a rather overworked and clunky text, specially written for the occasion (opening of a new university).
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Johannes Brahms: Symphony No.3 in F major, op.90. Otto Klemperer, Philharmonia Orchestra.

Symphony No. 8 [Beecham]

This is a powerful but quite dark version in my book.

Karl Stamitz: Flute Concerto in D major [Galway/Prieur]

HIP it is not but very good it is.

This reminds me that Sir James played on a 1971 album by the multi-national crossover / world music group Between. "Try Bach" is less than a minute long but a real classic ;).

Delighted you like the CD John. Levitan's 'Eternal Rest' features on quite a few CD or LP covers. I really like the painting:

Thank you, Jeffrey. Personally, while I do like the Levitan painting, I think a painting from a Finnish artist would have been more appropriate --- I mean we all know that Finland was a grand duchy under Russia, but still, there's many great Finnish paintings to choose from.

Like this one from Järnefelt for example:

Spohr: Nonet Op. 31 [Wiener Oktett]

I find this to be an intriguing work.

I'm afraid to ask you what you thought of it  ;D

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Hi Sarge,
Had to abort listening to the 4th. I will resume attentively from start tomorrow.

Did like most of the 3rd though, particularly the gorgeous soprano part coming in.
