Verdi: Aida [von Karajan]

I find this to be a terrifically powerful performance that is infused with drama throughout.

I like it too. I prefer it to Karajan's earlier Decca performance with Tebaldi, which is a bit too self-consciously beautiful at times, and also to the Solti, whose way with the score is altogether too bombastic for my taste. I like Muti quite a lot too and sometimes wonder why I don't own it*.

I actually have five Aidas in my collection and did a comparative review of them on my blog a while back https://tsaraslondon.wordpress.com/2017/03/11/verdis-aida-a-comparative-review-of-5-different-recordings/

* Just ordered the Muti for a ridiculously low price from Amazon UK.

Just finished this:

Johann Sebastian Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988. Chen Pi-hsien. Absolutely phenomenal... she really brought the music to life. Ms. Chen has won a fan in me. I see she has recorded a good amount of more Modern piano music in recent years, Schoenberg, Boulez, Stockhausen etc. I'm going to be looking into these recordings.

Two-thirds of the Trio Owon performing some LvB Violin Sonatas.  Good stuff.  I wouldn't mind if they recorded the rest.

Very nice, Karl. Love those works.

Edit - I'll probably join you in these works, but later on tonight. I might throw in Pohádka for good measure. :)

Nice, Dave. 8) That recording of the Piano Quartets is especially a favorite with Piano Quartet No. 2 being one of my top Enescu works.
