This is the last CD from this attractive set.

Mahler: symphony no 8.

Not a work I listen to often, as I definitely prefer loudspeakers here to headphones (too blasty). Fortunately, it seems I have the house unto myself as my wife has gone out for a couple of hours. :)

When set at a suitably high level the sound is superbly natural and detailed. Impressive front to back perspective (essential in this work). At soft dynamics more detail than usual is heard. A bit of congestion occurs in the loudest passages, but I hear a degree of saturation in all the recordings I know. Mahler the master orchestrator may very well have intended to overwhelm the listeners' ears.

Faure, Le jardin clos

One of the works rather ruined in this series by Jennifer Smith. I've yet to settle on a replacement, though I'm going to try a couple on streaming in just a moment.

Every month, I focus on works that are underrated, unfamiliar to me or both.
I listen to them multiple times until they are known to me.

This month it's both.

Love the beginning when the horns introduce this symphony🎼🎼

Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No.1 in F minor, op.10. Vasily Petrenko, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic

From the big box, this was the cover of the sleeve of the first disc, and probably my favorite picture of Shostakovich, who was young at the time, and his cat. Incidentally, one of our cats is getting eye surgery this morning, wish him luck.  :-X

Really enjoying this symphony lately. It's better than it's given credit for, I think.

Karajan's second live account of Mahler's 9th is a very great performance and was the Gramophone Record of the Year in 1984.

Okay, well Sarah Walker is a vast improvement.

Marilyn Schmiege sounds quite nice as well.

There are a few others that sound decent, these might be the best I've come across though.
