A stunning disc. I wasn't expecting such committed performances. 100% fun.

El Retablo de Maese Pedro

I'm listening to this work for the first time. Authentically Spanish. De Falla pays homage to Cervantes with inventive music, which is very reminiscent from the writer's time. The soprano was getting on my nerves, though. That would be my only complaint.
+1 for Kabalevsky. Symphony No.1, which shows the influence of his teacher Miaskovsky is especially fine although No.2 is better known.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

Good morning Que.

and probably with the next crash all the postings will be gone again, it kind defeats the purpose of this site, Right?
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Alan Bush: Three Concert Studies for Piano Trio.

Performed by Hugh Bean, Eileen Croxford and David Parkhouse.

All three of great worth, with the third Alla Bulgara of special interest. Bush uses the unequal beats of Bulgarian folk music in this piece which must be difficult to play but Bean and friends pull it off brilliantly.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

A couple of days ago lost in the crash I listened to Shostakovich's 8th string quartet.

Listening to it again in a somewhat different form.

Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Both CD'S belong to my fav list for some time!

Good to know. I'd had one of the Chants De L'Église De Rome, the one on the 16th-18th centuries, but hadn't realized there was a series.

Erland von Koch, Third and Fourth Symphonies - not unlike Holmboe & finely crafted:

... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Disc 1: Nos 1 & 2

Wonderful early Romantic music in a poetic, sensitive and refined performance.

Good morning all,

Enjoyed every minute of this one yesterday, particularly the variations and the Piano trio. Definitely a future purchase.

I did not listen much due to the site crash, and a lot of garden work. So this is what I have been listening to.

l'heritage de Petrus Alamire.
Secrets of Sanctus and Agnus dei by the famous music copyist and Spy of the Sixteen century.

Huelgas Ensemble, Paul van Nevel

A live recording, made at the Antwerp St. Paulus Church, 2015. You hear no audience and the sound is crystal clear. Voices are all distinctive and diction is near perfect. The balance between members in the choir is remarkable. One or two instances were Sopranos and Altos sing so loud that it was a pain to my ears, especially in Missa quinque vocum supra baises moy, Sanctus and Agnus Dei by Mathurin Forestier,  and a few other places. It did however not diminish my great admiration for this recording, it created a wow emotion in me. Such was the flow of music that it totally mesmerized me, and even though, my phone was ringing incessantly, I did not hear it at first.
Perfect recommendation from GMG members.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Heino Eller.
Symphonic Poems.

Estonian National SO, Olari Elts.

I am a great admirer of this composer, and hope Ondine will release more music of him, for the performances are so far, top notch. Sound is State of the Art, thus this combination is addictive. The orchestral writing has me all in feathers, and even after the third time listening to it, I almost want to clap and shout Bravo, rather silly really. :)

Eino Tamberg.
Orchestral Works.

Residentie Orkest Den Haag, Neeme Jarvi.

Another composer that has my full attention and admiration. Tamberg is mixing atonal with tonal in such a way that it is totally convincing, and never offensive. His orchestration is perfect and very economic in structure. Very clear lines, with imaginary fiestas of great beauty. Must find more of this composer, but there is little. Any suggestions anyone?

Division Musick.

Performed by Musicke & Mirth

I love this disc, for it gives me what I need from such music, and is a real stunner in terms of music and performance. Choice of composers is perfect, authentic instruments sound gorgeous, so this for me is a recommendation to all.
