An Easter recording that was still in the listening pile:

Though any time is a good time for CPE. This is an inpressive and iconic work.

This was purchased as an upgrade to Herreweghe (Virgin), and it definitely is.

Ivor Gurney: 12 songs.

Not from the folk inspired English song tradition. Deeply personal and admittedly knowing of Gurney's tragic life may be a factor, I found the songs sad and a bit unsettling.

One of note Severn Meadows with words and music written in the trenches by Gurney with the manuscript dated Caulaincourt, March 19 1917.

Frank Howes (who wasn't an admirer of Gurney's songs) wrote "He survived the Great War but it destroyed him".

Did you see the article in the Guardian last weekend about a new investigation into the music Gurney wrote after he was committed to the asylum?

a very interesting read....... (the recording you highlight is SO GOOD!)

I noticed that last time I covered the first 20 discs, so it's going to be all the way to the finish the coming weeks!

Of the early symphonies, it appears that I like the Polish least.

And now I see this post.  :'( :'( :'(

Miaskovsky: Symphony No. 23: Symphony Suite Op. 56 [Svetlanov]

I really like the opening movement with its multiplicity of themes and moods. Equally intriguing is the harmonic writing. His musical language is evolving again around now. The sweeping strings and melodies of the middle movement are also very appealing and I know that I am repeating myself but the woodwind harmonies and themes are exquisite here. There is great drive and energy in the final movement leaving one almost breathless.

Yes, and I do not want it to so I am dragging it out a little at the end so as to prolong it for as long as I can  ;D
