Sibelius, Violin Sonata in F

Comfortably the most significant thing on the album.
I am now working on a discography of the works of Vagn Holmboe. Please visit and also contribute!

Argenta is a warning to us all - do not run a car engine in an enclosed place.

I looked that up. Very unfortunate considering all he had been through earlier in life. :(

Mendelssohn: Piano Sextet

The music in the opening movement is energetic, buoyant and sparkling. Ouziel is wonderfully fluid in the piano part. The music is well driven without being overly assertive. The slow movement is a wonderfully attractive, appealing and engaging piece of music. In the third movement, Menuetto, the piano line once again sparkles and shines. The Final movement is another sparkling and vivacious affair. Once again the piano line is very fluid and unrelenting, in a good way. The forward momentum is wonderful and the music is well driven by all. The conclusion of the work is very fine.

That top CD, which I have you to thank for John, is indeed excellent.

Sounds much like Debussy to me, not music that stimulates me...

Yeah, I guess when you listen to music for 24 vacuum cleaners, it's difficult to make that connection with actual music. :-\

At 36:06, probably the shortest-playing disc in the box.  Call that a trivia factoid, for there is nothing to complain of, here.

I suggest getting 24 musicians to push the vacuum cleaners through the audience, 12 working out from the centre on paths corresponding to the 12 hours of the clock for the daytime and 12 working inwards for the night.

I like the spatial dimension. The Union may have an opinion on whether we employ musicians or Hooverists ....

With cleanliness being next to godliness the work could perhaps include a choir singing from Psalm 72 of the 24 things that Jesus Christ will do when He sits upon His throne and rules as King and Priest during the Millennium. 0:)

The 6th symphony. As a symphonist, Kancheli may have only had one thing to say, but he certainly said it well.
"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."

Onslow, George (1784-1853) - Wind Chamber Works w/ Ensembles Initium & Contraste on Timpani Records - listened this morning on Spotify - now I do own all 4 works performed, but have them on the added CDs below; for those interested, Onslow's list of compositions HERE - much more noted for his string quartets/quintets, but his wind writing is quite enjoyable.  Dave :)
