The Holst box is frusrtratingly incomplete, but I wouldn't be without it! Don't let your possession of it stop you looking for other Holst recordings from elsewhere is all I would suggest. The Malcolm Sargent Arthur Sullivan is lovely, but not to die-hard G&S fans' taste (but as I wasn't a G&S nutter and only like the works because of AS's contribution, I wasn't too floored by this consideration :) Personally, I'd sell my grandmother for an acorn if I could listen to Owen Brannigan singing pretty much anything!). I'm afraid I didn't think too highly of the Elgar box, but that could just be me, and there's plenty there that's delightful regardless. He happens to be a composer I'm happy to take in fairly small doses, I fear. Thirty big doses is more than I could really cope with!

All that said: there's a tremendous amount of wonderful music in all those sets, and you're in for long hours of pleasure derived from them.

As I said,all the sets are bargains,16 ,49 € for the Gilbert & Sullivan,at the moment I have not a single  recording ! The Holst,sealed for 14 € and Elgar for less than 40 €
I'm  filling a huge gap with these boxes and I'm not planning to purchase other recordings because this music in in a way on the  periphery of my musical interests  :)

I have enjoyed Borodin's first two symphonies very much, but have never heard his 3rd. Is it worth a look?

No.3 in very much in the vein of the first two BUT a) it is incomplete - just 2 movements and b) what there is was "completed" by Glazunov/Rimsky.  Not that that's a bad thing but I've never read a detailed study of exactly how much is "authentic" Borodin and how much is a good pastiche by the other two.  But  a lovely piece in its own right.  What an extraordinary tune-smith Borodin was!! (but I love the musical Kismet as well because of the tunes!)

Of course, there's no claim that Holst set is complete. ;)

Thank you very much Fergus, I am curious how I will appreciate the operettas, it is new territory for me.
Elgar, well, I had been planning to buy this edition for a long time, but every time I gave priority to other music.
With my age, I think it was now or never!  :D

Certainly you mean the String Quintet, Karl? ;)

The disc's title is to be taken in a broad sense. This very varied program revolves around dances, some folk-based, others based on features of welsh music without quoting actual tunes. Then there's the non dance-based works by Hoddinott, his overture Jack Straw and his 2nd concerto grosso. That's 45 minutes of Hoddinott. The contributions by William Mathias (14') and Daniel Jones (under 8') complete this fine disc. The sum total gives a feeling of outdoorsy fun and vigour, dances not meant for the ballroom but celebrating the welsh terroir and its fine people. These works have been assembled from various previous releases from the EMI, BBC, Unicorn and Lyrita labels. Bob Auger and Brian Culverhouse are among the sound engineers, showing the great care taken over the recordings.

I'll have to check my player to see if I have either, but the recording of the Piano Concerto isn't bad, though the star is the Requiem.

Lets see if I can get through this...previous attempts never held my interest

Good luck with the Havergal Brian. ;D He's a composer that does absolutely nothing for me, but from my understanding, he has quite the following here on GMG. ;)

Dvořák
Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53
Faust
Prague Philharmonia
Bělohlávek

Outstanding performance. One reviewer gave this particular performance a negative review because he felt that Faust wasn't 'Slavic' enough --- ummm...whatever the hell this means! She has Bělohlávek with the Prague Philharmonia accompanying her, what more could you ask for? I hate it when people nitpick something that they have no way of actually detecting. Anyway, this performance is scintillating.

Well, the Elgar box is  canceled, the seller on ebay has informed me that he cannot arrange the shipment due to illness. Fortunately I was able to cancel the purchase via paypal and the  payment is back on my account.
Unfortunately , another set with a friendly price has just been sold on ebay .  :o

Just buy the Boult box and call it day. ;) If you're looking for the chamber works, the Hyperion recordings (w/ The Nash Ensemble and Goldner String Quartet) will do nicely.

The Elgar Boult box set:

Incompleteness notwithstanding, the Holst box sounds an excellent deal, indeed, Jan.

Good eye, John, but consider the piano quintet (string quartet & piano)
In this wise, as a string quintet typically has either an additional viola or cello, Mozart's were viola quintets, and Taneyev's & Glazunov's, cello quintets.

Very nice and I owned some of these but gave them to my dad whenever I acquired the Boult boxes. The Barbriolli set is a good one, too.
