Good to have something by Walter Leigh beside his excellent Concertino available, Jeffrey.
+1 I think there's also a Lyrita recording of 'Agincourt' Lol.

Now playing, NYM Violin Concerto (Feigin/Dmitriev/USSR SO). I like this old Olympia series, not least for the Socialist Realist cover art (in this case 'The Return' by M. Kugach):
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Olympia was great - apart from interesting repertoire and access to the Melodiya catalogue they were "mid-price" discs at a time when anything less than full-price/£14 for a CD seemed a bargain.  I look back at the price I paid for some 2nd hand discs then and I wouldn't pay that now best part of 20 years later!

The Lyrita/Walter Leigh disc is just about the only recording dedicated to his music (apart from a Dutton chamber music disc).  His 'operetta' on Lyrita is a bit of a disappointment - Edward German(ish) without the tunes

Last night I watched a rehearsal of Má Vlast with a mortally ill Fricsay, what vitality and involvement, very impressive.

I'm not too familiar with Ifukube's music aside from the Ritmica Ostinata. I do have a number of Ifukube recordings (not film scores), but I haven't listened to any of them in ages --- I should dig them out. It seems the Ritmica Ostinata is the only work I return to with any frequency. The orchestra plays fine (by my ears), but I've never heard any of their other recordings, but in this work, they hold their own rather well. If you don't know this work, check out this performance:

Nice and unique music. I like it a lot. Yes it is a good contrast to Khachaturian pc. The NHK SO and the pianist, Kanon, perform very good imo. I knew very few non-film music by Ifukube. I should look for his non-commercial music.  Also, glad to hear that you like the recording and the performance of Tochigi orchestra. Thanks a lot.

Not to forget Neville Dilkes.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.
