Morning listening:

Good morning Que!

One of my favourite discs by the Huelgas ensemble.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Interesting RS and now, perhaps, we have a more balanced view of DLJ. One recording of his that I do think highly of is his Bax Symphony No.6, far preferable IMO to Del Mar's Lyrita recording.

Now playing Bax 6. My introduction to Bax was entirely through DLJ's symphony cycle, and was my only copy, for years. I can't help thinking of them as the way Bax should be performed, even though I now have access to other, more critically lauded versions. I think familiarity carries a great deal of weight for me.
"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

It is. And I have a soft spot for the Huguenots and music of the French Reformation anyway.

I'm thankful that the Huelgas Ensemble has been so prolific in recording the past years - Van Nevel is in his mid 70s now...

That recording of No.6 is arguably the best there is.

On Spotify of course - finding this on disc is probably very hard.

Adriaan Willaert did a very nice job with these Verdelot pieces, Sir Mandryka!  :)

Starting the "Beethoven around the World" series.

Back at op.131 again the next night, as to be honest listening to it straight after another quartet was a little difficult to take in. It's a masterpiece, but it's a very strange masterpiece and not something I find suitable for casual listening.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

vers la flamme

Silvius Leopold Weiss: Passacaille. Julian Bream

This is a beautiful work. Amazing performance from the late Julian Bream. I need to hear more Weiss.

Papy Oli

Good afternoon all.

Some Bach/Herreweghe for now.

My Musical Musings

Romantic guitar music!

Note that, as discussed, this not quite what is says on the box:  it is basically a Spanish (mainly) Baroque collection with José Miguel Moreno as a solist or accompanist playing the vihuela or the guitar, or as a director. There are several discs with songs. However, this suits my own purposes just fine: these are top shelf performances of unique repertoire.

I would buy the recording, if it would be available at a decent price.

But preferably the entire Willaert edition on Stradivarius would be reissued in a nice slim boxset...

One can dream, no?  :D

I think he's an excellent conductor.  His Bliss Colour Symphony is my favorite.  Groves would be my second favorite.

Yes that's an excellent disc. I appreciate your response and other members' comments. For me, I like the discs below.
