Great stuff, Karl. Of the two performances you listened to, did you prefer one over the other or were they both of equal merit?

I enjoyed them both.  Just an initial listen to both, so I don't feel up to putting them on the scales 8)

One of the reasons as to why I was curious was that I just bought a recording of the Preludes today with Andrey Gugnin on Hyperion (he also performed Piano Sonatas Nos. 1 & 2). I'm definitely looking forward to hearing this one.

Symphonic Addict

Symphonies 4 and 5 Jephta

The 4th has been the least interesting thus far. The idiom got sparser and even bleak here. However, the 5th, which made Toch win a Pulitzer Prize, is more direct and powerful.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Doesn't the 5th have narration or something? I remember one of the symphonies having a voice or vocal part. I can't remember which one.

Ah, yes. It's in the 4th, at the end of the movements. Another detail that put me off. I hate narration in works. There are so few works where I can tolerate it.

More Shostakovich!

String Quartet No. 5

Superb. There is a melody running in the first movement that appears in another work, but I can't know what it is.
