Dmitri Shostakovich
The Complete Symphonies
Symphony #4
Vasily Petrenko
Naxos

Some symphonies are harder than others.

Keep trying, foxandpeng. FWIW, the Shostakovich 4th is one of my favorites. It is actually a rather psychological work in many respects as it does seem, or at least at this time in compositional career, to be almost confessional in a way. I highly recommend the first documentary of this DVD titled The Red Baton:

This is another good documentary that I recommend checking out:

Just the last 4 minutes or so of Scriabin's Symphony No. 1. What appeals to me is that the ensemble is the Calgary Youth Orchestra (with not one, but three local choirs). I'm trying to imagine being 15 or 16 and discovering this work by actually playing it. No, this performance doesn't compare to the luxurious versions with Muti and others, but as a reminder of the importance of music education and helping young people discover off-the-radar works, it's excellent.

I will, indeed! Your encouragement always helps. I'm learning much of the value of perseverance. Documentaries, books and articles also help, although I don't seem to be able to see the linked media...  :(

You're welcome. I fixed the links, so now you should be able to see images.

Guitar quartet piece is good. The other music on this disk was hard to sit through.

Hummel, Johann (1778-1837) - Piano Trios w/ Voces Intimae on period instruments; Riccardo Cecchetti plays a restored fortepiano by Salvatore Lagrassa, 1815 in the Edwin Beunk Collection - yet another BRO purchase - these are beautiful performances on a great sounding historic fortepiano; for years my goto recording for these works is w/ Trio Parnassus on a modern piano (which I'm definitely keeping!), but will add this collection as an alternate PI performance; highly recommended to period instrument fans here.  Dave :)

That's somewhere on my 637 GB "to-listen" pile. I expect to have an opinion on it within the next 1-3 years.

Backtracking a bit and revisiting this work:

Panufnik
Bassoon Concerto
Michael von Schönermark, bassoon
Konzerthausorchester Berlin
Łukasz Borowicz

What a striking piece. The 11-minute Aria movement is a thing of wonder.

Now it's the turn of Opus 83

As with the First Concerto, a positive impression.

Que - a 2-CD set, I believe?  Added the Telemann TWV numbers above, all from the 55: catalog numbering - I have about a dozen works in that category but not the ones there - assume that you are enjoying?  Now rare for me to add a GP disc w/o some overlap but will look around.  Dave :)

What a great program these three make! I'm particularly fond of the last two; wonderful to have terrific live performances of both.
