Those choruses in the prologue!

"Thèbes, chante, des sept portes,

"

Sublime!

Good day to you, Karl.

Khachaturian: Symphony No.1 (Moscow RSO, Alexander Gauk) recorded in 1959:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Traverso

Is it just me that I get an eneasy feeling with this performance. There is a restless drive that takes my breath away.

It is a new release from Brilliant records,I can't listen to it.

I understand perfectly what you mean. There is also some smudged fingerwork, and it sounds as if he is rather indifferent to the music.

Bax, Arnold - String Quartets + Orchestral Works - own just the first volume below of the orchestral works on Chandos (Violin & Cello Concertos), but the company has put out 9 volumes - setup a Spotify playlist of the first six (these do not seem to have been boxed - why not?) - I have duplications on other discs.  Soon, onto another Brit!   Dave

We definitely hear the same thing, this is a video that Brilliant Classics is  advising to get an idea of what to expect, in this case we've been warned. He actually stumbles over the notes  ::)

Kodaly's Missa Brevis with Ferensik.  Gorgeous!  First time that I've heard this work before.

Thanks for bringing it up anyway.  :)

Since it led me to this issue from a year ago that I totally missed:

André

One of the things I admire in Gouvy's music is his ability to spin fine music out of apparently modest material, present it in the most flattering light (a very fine orchestrator he was) and to wrap it up at exactly the right time, leaving the listener with the pleasant impression of having been served with the best in just the right quantity. Mercier and the Saarbrücken orchestra do the music proud. Saarbrücken is but a mere stone throw away from Gouvy's hometown of Hombourg Haut. There is a tangible feeling of authenticity and relish to the orchestra's playing.
