Dmitri Shostakovich.

Symphonies (Complete)  CD 1.  Symphony No 1 in F minor, opus 10 (Dedicated to Mikhail Vladimirovich Kvadri.

Symphony No 3 in E flat major, opus 20. "The First of May". Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, Dmitrij Kitajenko.

If these first two Symphonies are anything to go by, the set will do just fine for me. Kitajenko takes an unhurried stance, and gives the music plenty of time to unfold. You get more detail, and have the leisure to approach and enjoy the music, more as with a high octane interpretation. Normally I like brisk tempo's, but in this case I rather go for a tad slower. I omitted the last movement of No 3, for I abhor this kind of quasi heroic singing. The basis for this ideology is a dead duck.

Harry - of the three sets of his symphonies that I own (below), Kitajenko is probably my favorite but I do not listen to these works much at all; not sure I even need three sets, plus there are so many others available w/ a lot of varied opinions in the forum.  Dave :)

Buxtehude - Sonatas BuxWV 266, 271 & 273 - Musica Antiqua Köln / Reinhard Goebel

This is an old recording from 1980, but I like these energetic performances.  0:)

I'm glad you're getting more out of this music than I have!

I'm surprised, considering its relative difficulty, just how enjoyable I am finding it.

Interesting! I don't have any of his piano concertos, but his music seems to be quite entertaining and well-crafted.

Yes, I've found the whole of Caetani's Vol. 3 excellent and memorable.

Surprised you don't at least own the Kondrashin set, Dave. If backed into a corner, held at gunpoint and told to pick one Shostakovich symphony cycle, the Kondrashin would be it. Scorching performances in the Soviet style that I love. But, it's understandable if you don't enjoy these works to invest in another set that isn't going to be listened to very often --- if at all.

You may want to hold off on that set, Dry Brett. I find Kitajenko while competent to be a bit lackluster. Buy at your own risk! We must remember that some listeners here will praise everything they hear.

I'll go on record as finding Kitajenko a good deal more than merely competent.

Your right, but some posters on GMG think that they are the measure of all things. And make it a point to denigrate posters that are not of his opinion.  He only has praise for his own choices, all others is rubbish.
That says enough about his opinion me thinks.

Ok. I will check it on streaming first. I tend to like other recordings by Kitaenko.

His Prokofiev Symphony cycle, and Prokofiev Piano Concerto Cycle (Teldec) are phenomenal, IMO.

Thanks Karl for your added support for the Kitajenko symphony set - that one and Barshai have been my favorites - don't believe that I've heard the Kondrashin recordings but a used box is going for $694 on Amazon USA, so not an option for me - but for those reading these comments and who may be thinking about purchasing the Kitajenko recordings, take a look at the attachment - overwhelming positive reviews on these performances and Barshai is mentioned a number of times; the MusicWeb review is LONG but detailed for each work.  Dave :)

I call this a maiden listen, although I played bass clarinet for this in the
New Jersey All-State Orchestra, as we performed it sans chœur. Sure was fun to play.
