String Quartet № 10 in a minor, Op. 85 (1964)
Quatuor Danel

I'm looking forward to exploring these this year. Listening to symphonies 1, 2 and 7 in the last few days has been positive.

I prefer this atmospheric work to the much longer and better-known Piano Concerto:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Superb album!

It really is, Karl. Both Hindemith STs are fabulous as is the one from Arnie, which I understand came out of a painful gestation for him having survived a heart attack during writing the piece.

Second listen to the string quartets from this set:

On the first listen the performances grated a bit, but I'm enjoying them more this go-round. The compositions are excellent.

Good to read! Taneyev was an expert craftsman indeed.

Do you have the set from Naxos?

Nyman: Concerto for harpsichord and string orchestra

A minimalistic composer that I really enjoy! This work is incredibly energetic and electrifying!

Agree that the Langgaard piano concerto is quirky to the degree of being disappointing, except from the lovely, general and romantic associations to the
rocky Kullaberg peninsula just near Copenhagen. The 3rd Symphony could be called a piano concerto too, I think.

There's an early recording of the Violin Concerto by Laursen, which is even shorter, at 8:49, but I haven't made a comparison; the Dacapo release is probably the best.

Thanks for the info. Yes, the magical 3rd Symphony has a prominent solo-piano part. Whenevery I listen to it, a feeling of overwhelming beauty captures me!

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Piano Concerto 23 in A Major, K. 488

Vladimir Horowitz, piano
La Scala Orchestra - Carlo Maria Giulini
(rec. 1987)

To my detriment, I don't get to Mozart too often, but always a good start to the new year.

Horowitz plays in a very Romantic manner, and I couldn't imagine a more yearning, soul-stirring 2nd movement.

Horowitz claimed that Mozart should be played as if it were Chopin, and vice versa

If you won't just love them both I'll eat my hat --- not that I have one, but still...

Don't worry. Almost whatever that has Langgaard on its title grabs my attention!  :D

It piques my curiosity, even more if the listeners sympathize with the music.

No, I don't have the Naxos, but I wouldn't be surprised if those performances are better than those by the eponymous quartet. I got the Northern Flowers set (Taneyev Q) for reasons of price. But I have some excellent Taneyev chamber discs on DG, cpo and Hyperion, plus an oddball French disc including his short Prelude and Fugue for piano.

Really sovereignly astonishing works, above all the Pastorale. It's an exquisite film score with tinges of charming and witty development and neoclassicism. Sensational.

I've also more interested in this Northern F. recording. It has more rusticity, more heartfelt performances overall.
