William Alwyn
Symphony 2
David Lloyd Jones
RLPO
Naxos

I don't think I have heard Alwyn's symphonies more than two or three times through, so good to explore something basically new. .

I've been listening to this disc nonstop lately. Excellent playing from the RLPO. I ordered the other two discs of the Alwyn symphonies from the same forces.

"Wolferl"
Pf Cto in D, K.175
Pf Cto in Bb, K.238
Pf Cto in C, K.246
Rondo in D, K.382

Listening to the entire disc is a bit (to borrow from Lewis Carroll) much of a muchness, which doesn't do the fine pieces justice. Not sure that we really need the K.175 (nice work for a 17-year-old, though it arguably is. The C Major is certainly a beauty, so the boy learnt and improved (as one expects)

I'd strongly recommend the Violin Concerto in that series as well.

I like the 9th Symphony very much.

Holst: Beni Mora.

An outstanding CD which I return to many times.
+1 for Holst CD, which has given me much pleasure. I purchased it at the Holst Birthplace Museum in Cheltenham many years ago.

Agreed. That is my favourite Alwyn work so far.

Walton: Hamlet and Ophelia - a poem for orchestra arranged by Muir Mathieson from the music for the film 'Hamlet'. This is a gloomily atmospheric tone poem and very fine. I bought the CD second hand and have just realised that it arrived without any of the accompanying notes for this or for 'Christopher Columbus' - a Musical Journey, which is very annoying.

Royal Liverpool PO - Vasily Petrenko

New to me:

A craggy little composition akin to The Tempest. I like the unvarnished sound Naxos captured Liverpool, even if it is a bit edgy.

VS

That is a really wonderful work but I have not heard the Petrenko version.

I'm impressed by such thoroughness. I never made any notes about anything and my listening is mostly whimsical.  :D

Yes, I gave you the Zacharias Schubert sonatas some time ago. What do your notes tell, did you like it?

Yes, the couple of sonatas I'd listened to I quite liked him.

Enescu, George (1881-1955) - Octuor, Op. 7; Dixtuor, Op. 14, Quintet, Op. 29, et al w/ the performers on the 3 recordings below; now there are several duplications, but all excellent recordings (several reviews attached for those interested) - just continuing my Enescu listening into the late afternoon, but only half way through my collection, so likely more of George tomorrow?  Dave :)
